Durham Cathedral Overview

Nearly 1,000 years old Cathedral has been a tremendous local favorite; of course, it is also most popular among international visitors who see it as one of the best Cathedrals in the world.

Apart from the common stand-out attractions of the amazing Norman architecture used as backdrops in movies ranging from Avengers: Infinity War to Elizabeth, it houses a wealth of treasure, most of which are very popular and some are hidden.

Durham Cathedral has existed for centuries; however, it remains a source of fascination. Knowing how the Cathedral came into existence can provide a helpful insight into the history of England.

The Cathedral was designed to be an extraordinary building, glorifying William the Conqueror’s reign and the various changes which he had brought to England. The size of the Durham Cathedral and the enormous efforts required to construct it were both extraordinary.

The Durham Cathedral was the first construction of its kind in England. The building was built using innovative techniques at that time, making it stand out in the 12th-century landscape of the place and also allowing it to remain an essential architectural marvel for various centuries. It was mostly built in the Romanesque style, which also emphasized semicircular doors & window arches.
