Blean Wood Nature Reserve Overview

A certified National Nature Reserve, RSPB Blean Woods covers 509 hectares of heath and woods. The visitors will go through various landscapes as they travel the trails and routes, including classic coppice woodland, meadows, health, and high forests.

Being the site of Special Scientific Interest, Blean Wood is significant for wildlife. It is a fantastic home for nature, assisted by the incredible support from various organisations, groups, and individuals.

Coppicing, a traditional cycle of rejuvenation & cutting of trees, is used to manage some portions of the woods. This results in the dense thickets that many breeding birds, particularly nightingales, like, while the warmth of the freshly cut regions draws our incredible variety of butterflies.

Both the greater and lesser spotted woodpeckers, which are rarer, thrive among the massive oak and beech trees that predominate in some wooded regions. However, they do not manage these, so standing trees die and decompose, providing homes and food for birds, insects, and bats. In August, the tourists may observe the vibrant purple heather and gorse with a coconut aroma growing along some of the trails in which Nightjars now breed and feed. The Bean Woods is listed in the list of best places to visit in Canterbury for a family outing in any season
