Newcastle Cathedral Overview

The monuments and stones that make up Newcastle Cathedral tell the city's story. The cathedral's distinctive Lantern Tower was formerly a guiding light for sailors travelling up the River Tyne, and the building as a whole commemorates more than 900 years of Newcastle's history. Because of the National Lottery Heritage Fund, people from all around the world can learn fascinating tales about such places to visit in Newcastle that date back hundreds of years.

Originally a parish church, Newcastle Cathedral was designated a cathedral in 1882, despite having been constructed in the 14th and 15th centuries under the name The Cathedral Church of St. Nicholas. But the lantern tower is definitely the building's most eye-catching element. The tower, which stands at over 197 feet tall, was commissioned in 1435 and features a magnificent crenellated Scottish Crown at its summit. The spire is illuminated brilliantly by floodlights once the sun goes down.

The interior is notable for its 15th-century canopied font and lectern, its 1676 organ, and its many 15th- to 20th-century superb statuary. Sir Alfred Gilbert designed the statue of Queen Victoria that stands in St. Nicholas Square (1900). Since visiting the cathedral doesn't cost anything, it easily is one of the places to go in Newcastle that is most preferred by tourists. Also, during your visit do not miss out on a cute little cafe here that serves refreshments.
