Steamship Shieldhall Overview

One of the most impressive places to visit in Southampton, the Steamship Shieldhall, is also the largest surviving working steamship of its type in all of Europe. Built-in 1954, this steamship has since been fully restored to its former glory and is a great example of how ships between the 1870s and 1960s worked.

A part of Britain’s National Historic Fleet, the Steamship Shieldhall, also popularly known as SS Shieldhall, is one of the best examples of the ships of the late 19th century, in addition to being the largest working steam ship in Europe. It was first built in 1954 to be operated as one of the sludge boats, and now remains a major remnant of Britain’s rich maritime heritage and history.

Upon a visit to this ship, visitors can experience the golden age of steam, as the ship allows various excursions, tours as well as training programs, and is also available for private charter and hire for a tour. It is also included as a major highlight during the Southampton Mayflower Maritime Festival every summer. While the ship was first used to transport treated sewage sludge and dump it into the sea, it was also used to carry an organized group of passengers from time to time.
