Bowes Museum Overview

Bowes Museum has been delighting everyone for more than 100 years and the revamp of £12M has transformed the museum into the most important places to see in Durham. It showcases family fun events, top-class exhibitions, fine dining, a great location, stunning galleries, and romantic history. The Bowes Museum is not limited to here; it surrounds a newly opened children's park, formal gardens, woodland walks, and a parkland.

The Bowes Museum in Durham is the house of the most extensive collection of Spanish paintings. These paintings showcase the life-work of Josephine Bowes and John. In 1892, the museum was opened to the public and continued to serve the people with an engaging series of exhibits and various public programs. The focus exhibition consists of dozens of works representing the finest of Bowen's collection of Spanish paintings.

The exhibitions at Bowes Museum feature artists such as Francisco de Goya, El Greco, Juan de Borgona, and many paintings on canvas and panel ranging from the early 16th century to the last 18th century.

It is among the most important museums in England and owns significant collections of paintings and artwork.

At this museum, sculptures, ceramics, and furniture are well represented, and the collection has received designated status from the government. Museum’s treasure includes a botanic cabinet that houses the exotic plant collection of Mary Eleanor Bowes.
