Netley Abbey Overview

Set out to explore the historic Netley Abbey, known as the most complete surviving abbey from the early 13th century. A major monument of the city, it has also served as a place of inspiration to famed English writers, poets, and artists, including John Constable, Arthur Conan Doyle, etc.

Amongst the most important historic sites and tourist attractions in Southampton, Netley Abbey dates back to 1279 and is the only remaining part of an old medieval monastery made by Cistercian monks. It is also said to be the most complete monastery of its kind in south England, consisting of an old church, parts of an old mansion as well as the house of an abbot.

A haven for history buffs, Netley Abbey and its magnificent ruins have been said to inspire many writers, artists, and poets throughout history. With almost all of the walls of this building still standing today, it is here where you can learn about the 800-year-old evolution of this structure, which has served as a monastery, a mansion house, as well as age-old ruins. As of today, you can see the shell of the church and the monastic buildings here, along with the walls. On other days, the Netley Abbey is also used as an open-air theatre, for weddings, and other events.
