Newcastle Central Station Overview

Located in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne, Newcastle Central Station is one of the city's busiest transportation hubs. Approximately 432 kilometres (268 miles) north of London King's Cross, it may be found on the East Coast Main Line. Central Station Metro station, located directly beneath the national train station, connects passengers to the Tyne and Wear Metro network, which provides local rail services in the Newcastle upon Tyne area.

Newcastle Central Station, serving both the Newcastle & Carlisle Railway and the York, Newcastle & Berwick Railway, first opened in August 1850. As of recent, it has been designated as a Grade I building and can be found in the Grainger Town neighbourhood west of the Castle Keep. There are only ten stations out of Simon Jenkins' Britain's 100 Best Railway Stations that were given five stars, and this is one of them. The East Coast Principal Railway, which runs between London and Edinburgh through Yorkshire and Newcastle, is the main line that serves the station.

Liverpool and Manchester continue to get frequent service from TransPennine Express, and the South West and West Midlands of England are served by CrossCountry. As a stop on the Durham Coast Line, the station is convenient for commuters travelling to and from Gateshead, Hartlepool, Sunderland, and Middlesbrough. Faster construction of the train shed meant that Queen Victoria could arrive by train to officially open the station on August 29th, 1850. Newcastle proclaimed the day a public holiday.
