Museum Of Making At Derby Silk Mill Overview

The Museum of Making celebrates the rich history and innovation of Derby. Situated in the Derwent Valley Mills UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a truly unique destination which tells Derby’s 300 years of history, inspiring newfound creativity and inspiration among the people.

Created and designed by the people and industries of Derby, the Museum of Making is no ordinary museum. One of the must-visit places to go in Derby for all tourists and visitors. You will enter the museum via the Grade I listed Bakewell Gates and be welcomed by a stunning Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engine suspended from the ceiling of the Civic Hall. You can know more about the story of the technology of the engine at the Flight Deck gallery in the museum. With over 30,000 objects for the public to see and enjoy in the Assemblage, the museum is a storehouse of knowledge displaying each object according to the material from which they were made. 

The museum sits on the site of the Derby Silk Mill which has transformed the industrial outlook of the city. Visitors can even do activities at the Silk Mill like building their own system of cogs to learn how Derby Silk Mill turned the natural power of the river into energy for silk production.
