Most packages include:

  • Sightseeing at popular attractions, waterfalls, caves, and viewpoints

Depending on the package, you may also get:

These inclusions help ensure a smooth travel experience, allowing you to enjoy Wayanad without worrying about logistics.

Who Are These Wayanad Packages Best for?

Wayanad offers a mix of nature, adventure, wildlife, and relaxation, making it suitable for different types of travellers. Whether you're planning a romantic getaway, a family vacation, a weekend escape, or an outdoor adventure, there's a Wayanad package to match your travel style.

Couples and honeymooners:

If you’re looking for a quieter, more scenic experience, Wayanad works best with well-located stays, short nature walks, and waterfall visits spaced out over the day. Most couples prefer slower itineraries with fewer check-ins and more time at the property, especially in areas like Meppadi and Vythiri.

Families:

Wayanad is a good option for families when the plan focuses on easy-access spots like dams, lakes, and plantation areas, instead of long treks. Based on our experience, it’s better to limit physically demanding activities and keep travel distances shorter, especially when travelling with kids or seniors.

Adventure travellers:

If you enjoy being active, Wayanad offers treks like Chembra Peak, ziplining, and wildlife safaris, but these need proper planning. Permits, weather conditions, and timing slots play a big role, so itineraries are usually structured around 1–2 key activities per day rather than overloading.

Weekend travellers (from Bengaluru, Mysuru, Kozhikode):

For short trips, the destination works best with tight route planning and early start times. Since most of your travel is by road, choosing the right circuit and avoiding backtracking is what makes a 2–3 day trip feel smooth instead of rushed.

Planning tip: From what we’ve seen, Wayanad trips feel most enjoyable when you don’t try to cover every waterfall or trek. A better approach is to pick a few key experiences and plan your route around them, so travel time doesn’t take over your trip.

How to Reach Wayanad

While planning for a Wayanad trip, there are various options to reach the region, i.e. air, train, and road.

By Air: One of the nearest airports to Wayanad is Calicut International Airport, located at a distance of around 90 km. You can also take flights to Kempegowda International Airport and Kannur International Airport based on your route. From the airport, you can complete your journey by road via private transfers or taxis.

By Train: The nearest railway station is Kozhikode Railway Station, which is well-connected to major cities. Another option is Mysuru Junction, which is around 125 km away from Wayanad, and you will need a road transfer of around 3-4 hours to reach your destination.

Most travellers arriving from Kerala, Chennai, and South Indian cities

Mysuru Junction

3–4 hrs

Travellers coming from Bengaluru and Karnataka

Kannur Railway Station

By Road: Wayanad is a road-first destination, as most of your journey and all local travel is done by road. It is well-connected from Kozhikode (2–3 hours), Mysuru (3–4 hours), and Bengaluru (6–7 hours), making the district accessible for short trips.

Why Does Your Stay Area Matter After Arrival

After reaching Wayanad, your stay location, such as Meppadi, Kalpetta, Sulthan Bathery, or other areas, can have a major impact on your daily travel time. While distances may look short on a map, hilly roads, traffic near tourist spots, and forest routes often make journeys take longer than expected.

For example, Meppadi is convenient for attractions like Chembra Peak and Soochipara Falls, while Sulthan Bathery is better suited for exploring the eastern side of Wayanad. Kalpetta is often preferred by travellers who want a more central base.

Choosing a stay that matches your sightseeing plans can save several hours of driving over the course of your trip, reduce travel fatigue, and allow more time for sightseeing, relaxation, and local experiences.

At Thrillophilia, we help travellers select the most suitable stay area based on their itinerary, preferred attractions, and travel style. Our destination experts consider factors such as sightseeing routes, travel times, and activity locations to recommend accommodations that help minimise road travel and maximise your time exploring Wayanad.

Best Places to Cover on a Wayanad Trip

Wayanad is filled with natural and cultural attractions, from ancient caves and waterfalls to wildlife sanctuaries and scenic landscapes. Here are some of the must-visit places to include in your itinerary.

1. Edakkal Caves

Located among the hills of Wayanad, Edakkal Caves are famous for their ancient rock carvings of people and animals. Reaching the caves involves a steep uphill walk, narrow pathways, and stone steps, making the journey part of the experience. A visit usually takes around 2–3 hours, including the climb and exploration. It is best suited for active travellers and couples, while families with older children can also visit comfortably. Entry may be restricted during heavy rainfall or bad weather.

2. Kuruva Island

Kuruva Island is a group of islands on the Kabini River, connected by walking paths. It is a great place to enjoy nature, spot birds and butterflies, and take photographs. Visitors can also enjoy bamboo rafting. A visit usually takes 2–3 hours, depending on how much you explore. It is suitable for couples, families, and seniors because of the easy walking trails. The island may close during heavy rains or high water levels.

3. Chembra Peak

Chembra Peak is the highest peak in Wayanad, standing at about 2,100 metres above sea level. It is known for its scenic trekking trail and the famous heart-shaped lake called Hridaya Saras. Visitors can enjoy trekking, photography, and panoramic views of the surrounding hills and forests. The trek takes around 3–4 hours for a round trip. It is ideal for active travellers and couples, while young children and seniors may find it challenging. Entry requires permission from the Kerala Forest Department and is subject to daily visitor limits.

4. Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary

Tholpetty is a popular wildlife zone within the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. Visitors can explore the forest on a guided jeep safari and may spot elephants, deer, monkeys, bison, leopards, tigers, and many bird species. A visit usually takes 2–3 hours and is suitable for wildlife enthusiasts, couples, and families. Safari entry depends on forest department permissions, availability, weather conditions, and scheduled timings.

5. Meenmutty Waterfalls

Meenmutty Waterfalls is one of the largest waterfalls in Wayanad, cascading down from a height of around 300 metres in multiple levels. Surrounded by dense forest, it is popular for photography and nature experiences. Reaching the waterfall requires a trek through forest trails, and the complete visit usually takes 3–4 hours. It is best suited for couples and adventure lovers, while the trek can be difficult for seniors and families with small children. Access may be restricted during heavy rainfall for safety reasons.

6. Banasura Sagar Dam

Banasura Sagar Dam is the largest earthen dam in India and is surrounded by beautiful hills and a large reservoir dotted with small islands. It is a popular sightseeing spot where visitors can enjoy boating, photography, and short walks. A visit typically takes 1.5–2 hours and is suitable for families, couples, and seniors. The dam is open throughout the year, though boating activities depend on weather and water conditions.

7. Bamboo Forests

The Bamboo Forests of Wayanad offer a peaceful natural setting with dense bamboo groves and rich wildlife. Visitors can enjoy nature walks, jeep safaris, photography, and wildlife spotting, including elephants, deer, and various bird species. A visit generally takes 2–3 hours and is suitable for families, couples, and nature lovers. Entry is managed by the Kerala Forest Department and may depend on permits and forest regulations.

8. Jain Temple, Sulthan Bathery

The Jain Temple in Wayanad is a historic site known for its stone architecture and cultural significance. Built in the 13th century, it reflects Jain heritage and was also used as a storage facility during the time of Tipu Sultan. Visitors can admire the carved pillars, stone walls, and peaceful surroundings. A visit usually takes 30–45 minutes and is suitable for families, couples, and seniors due to its easy accessibility. The temple remains open throughout the year.

Things to do in Wayanad

Beyond sightseeing, Wayanad offers a variety of activities that let you experience its natural beauty and local culture. Here are some popular experiences to try during your trip.

1. View Sunrise at Lakkidi View Point

Lakkidi View Point is one of the highest viewpoints in Wayanad, situated along the Thamarassery Ghat road. From this viewpoint, you can admire wide views of mist-covered hills, valleys, and winding ghat roads. It is one of the best places for sunrise photography when clouds are floating below the hills. Here, you can click pictures, take short breaks, and enjoy the cool breeze.

2. Enjoy Boating at Pookode Lake

Pookode Lake is a freshwater lake situated at an altitude of about 770 metres above sea level. Surrounded by hills and forests, the lake is known for its peaceful setting and scenic beauty. Here, you can enjoy row boating or pedal boating on the lake or take short walks along the pathways. A visit to the lake generally takes 1-2 hours and is ideal for couples, families, and solo travellers. The boating charges range from INR 100 to INR 250 per boat for a 30-minute ride, depending on the boat type.

3. Cycling on Plantation Roads Near Kalpetta

Have a wonderful experience as you ride through coffee, tea, and spice plantations with scenic views and gentle slopes near Kalpetta. Routes include slightly hilly stretches to easy village roads, making it ideal for both beginners and active travellers. A cycling session can take 2-3 hours, during which you can enjoy photography, village life, and fresh air along the way. And guided cycling tours cost INR 500 to INR 1,500 per person, depending on the route, duration, and whether bicycle rental is included.

4. Experience a Wildlife Safari

Explore the forests of Wayanad on a guided jeep safari and spot wildlife such as elephants, deer, bison, monkeys, and various bird species in their natural habitat. It is one of the best ways to experience the region's rich biodiversity and scenic landscapes. Jeep safari prices generally range from INR 1,500–3,500 per jeep, depending on the sanctuary, route, and duration of the experience.

5. Visit Spice and Coffee Plantations

Wayanad is known for its coffee, pepper, cardamom, and tea plantations. A plantation visit offers a chance to learn about local farming practices, enjoy peaceful surroundings, and experience the region's agricultural heritage up close.

Best Time to Visit Wayanad

Wayanad can be visited throughout the year, with each season offering a different experience. The best time depends on whether you prefer pleasant weather, lush monsoon landscapes, or quieter travel periods.

October to February:

This is the peak season to explore Wayanad with temperatures ranging between 10°C and 25°C. Due to clear weather, you can enjoy the wildlife safaris, sightseeing, and famous treks like Chembra Peak. These months are ideal for first-time visitors, couples, and families, due to higher attraction accessibility and better road conditions.

March to May:

During these months, temperatures range between 22°C and 32°C during the day, but mornings and evenings remain comfortable for exploration. This season is perfect for travel during the school holidays, plantation visits, and resort stays. However, trekking in these months can be challenging and tiring for visitors.

June to September:

This is the monsoon season in Wayanad, with regular and sometimes heavy rainfall. The landscape becomes lush and green, and waterfalls like Meenmutty Waterfalls are at their best to explore. However, road travel can take longer, trekking trails may be slippery, and leeches are common in forest areas. Some attractions may also close temporarily during heavy rain.

Please note that access to certain waterfalls and treks depends on permissions and local safety checks by the Kerala Forest Department. Monsoon trips may not be ideal for seniors or for those who seek uninterrupted and easy movement. Also, weekend crowding from nearby cities may also affect your experience and travel time.

Note: Our local teams and operators continuously monitor weather conditions, route accessibility, and official advisories to help ensure a smooth travel experience. If any activity or attraction is affected by safety restrictions, suitable alternatives or itinerary adjustments are arranged whenever possible.

Food, Stay Areas, and Practical Tips for Wayanad

A little planning can go a long way in making your Wayanad trip more comfortable. From choosing the right stay location to understanding local food and travel conditions, these tips can help you make the most of your visit.

Local Food You Should Try

Wayanad offers a mix of traditional Kerala and Malabar cuisine. Popular dishes include Appam with Stew, Malabar Biryani, Puttu and Kadala Curry, Kerala Parotta, Fish Curry, and Chicken Roast. Many dishes are prepared with coconut, local spices, and fresh ingredients.

Some popular places to eat include Wilton Restaurant (Sulthan Bathery) for Malabar biryani, 1980's A Nostalgic Restaurant (Kalpetta) for Kerala-style meals, and The Coffee Grove Restaurant (Meppadi) for local and international dishes.

Vegetarian Food Options

Vegetarian travellers will find plenty of choices in Wayanad, especially in towns like Kalpetta, Sulthan Bathery, and Mananthavady. Common options include Idli, Dosa, Uttapam, Vegetable Thali, Poori Bhaji, and South Indian meals.

Restaurants such as Hotel Udupi, Sri Annapoorna Vegetarian Restaurant, and several local eateries serve fresh vegetarian food throughout the day. In remote areas and near trekking locations, food options may be limited, so it is helpful to check meal availability in advance.

Best Areas to Stay

Choosing the right stay location can save travel time and improve your overall experience.

  • Kalpetta – Best for first-time visitors and easy access to major attractions.
  • Meppadi – Ideal for nature lovers, waterfalls, tea estates, and scenic views.
  • Sulthan Bathery – Great for exploring wildlife areas, Edakkal Caves, and nearby heritage sites.
  • Mananthavady – Suitable for travellers looking for a quieter and less crowded stay.

Meal Timings to Keep in Mind

Most local restaurants follow fixed meal timings:

  • Breakfast: 7:30 AM – 10:30 AM
  • Lunch: 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM
  • Dinner: 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM

Late-night dining options are limited, especially outside the main towns, so it is best to have dinner early or check restaurant timings beforehand.

Driving and Daily Planning Tips

Wayanad is a hill destination, and travel between attractions can take longer than it appears on maps due to hilly roads and traffic near popular spots.

  • Start your day early to avoid crowds.
  • Plan to visit 2–3 major attractions per day for a relaxed experience.
  • Keep extra travel time between locations.
  • During the monsoon season, road conditions and travel times may change due to rain.

Common Planning Mistakes Travellers Make

Based on our experience of planning Wayanad holidays, travellers often make a few common mistakes, such as choosing the wrong stay location, underestimating travel time between attractions, or visiting during peak hours. With Thrillophilia's curated itineraries and destination expertise, we help avoid these issues, ensuring a smoother and more enjoyable trip.

  • Wrong Stay Location: Selecting the wrong stay area, such as staying far from key attractions, reduces actual sightseeing and increases daily travel time.
  • Assuming All Activities Are Easy: Assuming each activity is family-friendly, as tough treks, waterfalls, and caves require physical effort.
  • Ignoring Monsoon Conditions: Avoid monsoon road conditions and trail challenges during heavy rains when routes can be slow or slippery.
  • Overloading a Short Trip: Trying to cover all major treks, waterfalls, and wildlife places in 2 days, which can be the cause of rushed travel between places.
  • Skipping Entry Timings & Permits: Not focusing on entry timings and permit limits at places like trekking points, caves, and waterfalls.
  • Not Checking Weather Updates: Not checking weather updates and forecasts during the monsoon season can be the cause of last-minute changes in plans.

Travel Updates and Safety Information for Wayanad

  • Entry is capped at ~1,920 visitors per day in Edakkal Caves, so it is advised to visit the caves early in the morning to avoid access difficulties.
  • In forest or ghat sections, you can expect leeches on trails, slower road movement, and occasional temporary route restrictions during the monsoon season.
  • Cave and trekking route access may be temporarily closed during heavy rains because of safety risks and slippery trails.
  • Activities like wildlife safaris and Chembra Peak trekking need permission from the Kerala Forest Department, with limited daily slots.
  • During heavy rain periods and extreme weather events in past years, disasters like landslides have increased in various parts of Wayanad. It is advised to plan your Wayanad trip accordingly, around hill routes and forest areas.

This was my first booking through Thrillophilia for Wayanad aka God's own paradise. I was bit anxious at start but Thrillophilia members especially Rahul and Komal Meena made sure all the arrangements were perfectly executed and delivered. The whole trip was planned and only thing that we were worried was 'what are we gonna wear today' :p as all other things were handled gracefully. I have attached the beautiful pics of our group and wayanad which depicts how much we enjoyed. Special thanks to Komal, our point of contact, for gracefully handling whatever queries we had and even attending our calls while riding to office on her scooty :D :))... Read More

We enjoyed the martial arts show a lot; the performers were incredibly skilled and it was a very thrilling experience. The support group on WhatsApp was active 24/7 and answered all our questions promptly. The hotels were premium and offered great hospitality throughout our stay. The backwater cruise was a very relaxing and unique experience that we highly recommend. A very well-planned trip that delivered on all its promises.

The drive to Thekkady was a bit curvy, but the stunning scenery made the journey very enjoyable. The coordination was very professional and we never had to wait for our vehicle at any point. The rooms in Munnar were cozy and had a beautiful view of the valley. We had a great time exploring the local markets and buying some fresh tea and coffee. A very well-organized trip that delivered exactly what was promised.

Loved the serenity of the backwaters after the constant noise of the capital city. It’s so different from the chaos of Delhi; we actually felt like we were on a vacation. The support team kept in touch with us daily on WhatsApp to ensure everything was going according to plan. The hotel in Kochi was right in the middle of the heritage area, making it easy to explore the local markets and cafes during our free time.

Great coordination by the Jaipur sales team who explained everything clearly before we booked. The documents were all sent on time and our driver was very punctual and safe. We particularly loved the resort in Thekkady which was surrounded by trees and had a very peaceful vibe. The backwater cruise was a unique experience that we will cherish. Overall, it was a very high-quality trip and worth every rupee spent.

Everything from the airport pickup to the hotel check-in was smooth and well-timed. We didn't have to worry about anything during our 6-day stay, making it an ekdum tension-free holiday. Traveling from Vadodara, we found the greenery and the fresh air of Kerala to be very refreshing. The houseboat stay was the highlight and the staff on board was very attentive. Other companies were not so flexible with our travel needs, but this team handled everything with ease. The hotels were in great locations and the transfers were always on time. We really enjoyed the spice plantation tour and the cultural shows. A very reliable travel partner for anyone in Bhopal.

Booked: Scenic Getaway to Wayanad
Travelled From: Mumbai
We took the flight from Mumbai and the pickup at Kochi airport was right on time with a smiling driver waiting for us. The Varkala cliff views are way better than what you see in photos; it’s a must-visit for beach lovers. Deepak was a great help throughout the booking, explaining the itinerary clearly and helping with hotel upgrades. Even though it was a busy season, all our entries and tours were pre-arranged, saving us a lot of time.
