About Chester City Walls

Chester City Walls are part of the historical structure around the city of Chester, it was built around 70 or 80 century AD by the Romans. The defensive walls circumvent the whole city, the whole circuit was finally completed in the 12th century. The walls were used as a shielding structure again during the civil war in the 17th century and were damaged greatly during the war, afterwards, they were turned into leisure spot.

Listed amongst the most sought-after tourist places to visit in Chester, the walls form a total walkway length of 3.2 km around the medieval city. The broad sandstone walls were built for the sole purpose of military use and protection of the city from raids, but after the civil war in the 17th century, the walls ceased to have military use and were turned into recreational spots.
