Reviewed by Thrillophilia Gangtok Operations Team

Updated as of May 2026

Thrillophilia Gangtok tour packages start from INR 9,500 per couple for a 2-day trip. Gangtok is one of the most accessible hill stations in India, with Pakyong Airport now offering direct flights from Kolkata and Delhi. So, if you have a long weekend coming up, this is the perfect opportunity to take a quick escape to the heart of Sikkim before Monday rolls around again.

Gangtok is more than just a hill station. It is the administrative and permit hub for all restricted tourist regions like North Sikkim, Nathula Pass, and Lake Tsomgo. These ecotourism permits are issued only by the SDM office or through authorised agents in Gangtok. Thrillophilia ensures all required permits are arranged through a single point of contact and confirmed in advance for your peace of mind until the very last minute.

When you take a stroll through Khau Gully food street in the evening or head out on an excursion to Yumthang Valley, surrounded by snow-capped mountains on all sides, that is when you realise how rewarding Gangtok truly is. Its chaotic yet welcoming atmosphere, combined with year-round cool weather, makes it the perfect break from the hustle of everyday life.

With the ethical inclusion of AI in our Gangtok tour packages, Thrillophilia’s experts design itineraries personalised to fit every Indian traveller’s needs and preferences. From 24/7 on-trip assistance and monitoring to arranging restricted-area permits in advance, we take care of every aspect of your trip. We focus on transparency, comfort, and insight-driven route planning for every Gangtok traveller because your experience will always matter more than a checklist of destinations.

How to Reach Gangtok

Previously, the only way to reach Gangtok was to reach Bagdogra Airport (IXB) or Siliguri/New Jalpaiguri Junction and then cover a distance of 125 km to reach Gangtok via local bus or cabs.

This is still the classic and the most accessible route for travellers.

Pakyong Airport (PYG), Sikkim’s only airport, has now started providing limited daily direct flights from Kolkata and Delhi for select services. PYG is located at a distance of 35 km from Gangtok and saves over 2.5 hours in travelling time as compared to the Bagdogra route. Although not available for most Indian cities yet, PYG is expanding its connectivity to more cities, with more airlines expected to operate this route in the future.

Route: NJP-Siliguri-Sevoke-Teesta River-Rangpo-Gangtok

1.Pakyong Airport (PYG)

Flight Duration: 1-2 hours, depending on departure city

Flight Fare: INR 8,000-12,000 return

Departure Cities: Kolkata and Delhi (Guwahati departures are expected to be added soon)

Operating Airlines: SpiceJet is the primary airline operating this route, with Indigo expected to join soon.

Distance from Gangtok: Approx. 35 km

Cab Fare to Gangtok: INR 2,600-4,500 for private cabs

2.Bagdogra Airport (IXB)

Flight Duration: 1-3 hours, depending on departure city

Flight Fare: INR 6,000-15,000+ return

Departure Cities: Kolkata, Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, and Bengaluru

Operating Airlines: SpiceJet, Indigo, Air India Express, Druk Air, and Akasa Air

Distance from Gangtok: Approx. 130 km

Cab Fare to Gangtok: INR 3,000-6,000+ for private cabs

3.New Jalpaiguri Railway (NJP)

Journey Duration: 1-3 hours, depending on departure city

Train Fare: INR 400-1,600+ return depending on your departure city and class

Departure Cities: Kolkata, Delhi, Bihar, Mumbai, Assam, and Chennai

Operating Trains: Vande Bharat, Darjeeling Mail, Capital Express, and Aronai Express

Distance from Gangtok: Approx. 120 km.

Cab Fare to Gangtok: INR 3,000-6,000+ for private cabs

Thrillophilia Insights: Kolkata provides the most train options for NJP Junction, with multiple daily trains from various Kolkata stations. Siliguri Junction is also a preferred option to travel to Gangtok, although its train frequency is quite limited.

New Jalpaiguri to Gangtok Shared Jeep Insights

  • You can either board a shared jeep to Gangtok from the taxi stand area outside NJP Railway Station, or take a 10–15 minute auto ride to the Siliguri taxi hub and board one from there. Siliguri is often preferred due to greater jeep availability and faster departures.
  • The jeeps do not have a fixed departure or arrival schedule. They typically depart once 8–10 seats are filled, with a wait time of 20–60 minutes. Mornings usually see faster departures with more vehicles available, while availability gradually becomes limited by evening.
  • Front seats cost more, at INR 700–800 per person, while back seats are cheaper, at INR 350–500 per person. If you have motion sickness or do not prefer cramped spaces, we recommend opting for the front seats.
  • The usual vehicles include the Tata Sumo and the Mahindra Bolero, with a travel time of 4.5–5 hours. Traffic at the Rangpo checkpoint, landslides, and road repairs can result in delays.

Gangtok's Permit Architecture: What You Need and How to Get It

The state of Sikkim is filled with destinations of natural, cultural, and administrative importance. With sustainable development, nature preservation, and community engagement in focus, Sikkim has 11 ecotourism zones. While promoting local culture and minimising negative impacts on nature, Sikkim also shares a border with China, which brings us to the heavy presence of the military and zones with checkpoints to be mindful of.

To visit border and ecotourism zones, all travellers are required to carry valid permits issued prior to arrival. Gangtok serves as the permit hub for the entire North Sikkim circuit, along with Tsomgo Lake ILP and Nathula Pass, making it the most important place to be at before you expand your travels to other regions. To fully cover Sikkim, the number of PAPs (Protected Area Permit) one needs to get issued can be confusing and frustrating.

This is why all Thrillophilia packages to Sikkim include PAP assistance. Our team issues and confirms your permits before your departure so that you can enjoy your Gangtok trip without worrying about arranging for your next permit.

1.Tsomgo Lake ILP (Inner Line Permit)

Required for: Tsomgo Lake (3,753 m)

Eligible: Indian Nationals

Issued at: Sikkim Tourism counter, Gangtok + licensed agents

Days Operational: Daily (weather-dependent)

Approximate Fee: INR 100-200 per person

Lead Time: Same day or the night before

2.Nathula Pass PAP

Required for: Nathula Pass (4,310 m)

Eligible: Indian Nationals only

Issued at: SDM Office, Gangtok / licensed agents

Days Operational: 4 days a week (Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday)

Approximate Fee: INR 200-400 per person

Lead Time: a minimum of 1 day in advance

3.North Sikkim Ecotourism Permit

Required for: Lachung, Yumthang, Gurudongmar Lake

Eligible: Indians and foreigners (additional docs required for foreigners)

Issued at: Licensed Gangtok agents only

Days Operational: Daily (quota-based)

Approximate Fee: INR 200-500 per person

Lead Time: 1-2 days before your visit

4.Sikkim PAP (for foreigners)

Required for: Entry into Sikkim, all zones

Eligible: Foreign nationals

Issued at: Sikkim Tourism counters or Delhi/Mumbai offices

Days Operational: Daily

Approximate Fee: INR 100 per person

Lead Time: 2-3 days before your visit

Key PAP Requirements

Permit Application: Permits can be obtained from the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department through a licensed travel agent

Documents: Originals and photocopies of ID proof (Aadhaar Card, Voter ID, Driving Licence, and Passport)

Foreigner Rules: Foreign nationals cannot travel solo and have to travel in groups of at least 2. They must also gain online clearance by applying via licensed local travel agents.

Note: Your permit can be suspended on account of weather or security reasons.

The Tsomgo Lake and Nathula Pass Day Circuit

Tsomgo Lake (40 km from Gangtok) and Nathula Pass (58 km) are the most common day circuits that most travellers choose, especially for weekend trips. The route also aids in acclimatisation for covering higher-altitude places further into North Sikkim. It’s very important not to break the route of gradual altitude gain to prevent Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

1.Tsomgo Lake

Located in East Sikkim, this glacial lake is also known as the Changu Lake. This lake holds rewards for you no matter what time of the year you visit, with a frozen lake during winter and, during summer, the edge of the lake is lined with blooms of rhododendrons along with blue and yellow poppies, primulas, irises and others. There’s a good chance you might spot red pandas here while enjoying a yak ride.

Altitude: 3,753 m

PAP Required: Yes

Best Time To Visit: April-May and October-November

Yak Rides: INR 50-100 per person, depending on season and demand

Know More About: Tsomgo Lake

2.Nathula Pass

Located on the Indo-Tibetan border and 58 km away from Gangtok, Nathu La is one of the only three open trading posts between India and China and one of the few places in India where travellers can observe an international order zone. It is open only to Indian nationals for 4 days a week, with photography of any military personnel or operatives strictly penalised. You can take a scenic yak safari and watch the border gates from here, visit the war memorial, the Exhibition Centre of the Indian Army, and Mt Chomolhari. Connectivity is poor on the Nathula route, so make sure to carry cash to avoid any payment-related hassle here.

Altitude: 4,310 m

PAP Required: Yes

Open: May to mid-November, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays (closed on public holidays)

Know More About: Nathula Pass

Thrillophilia’s Insight on AMS

One of the most important medical factors to be mindful of during your Gangtok trip is Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). It occurs due to sudden exposure to rapid altitude gain without giving your body enough time to adjust to the change. This can result in headaches, fatigue, nausea, dizziness, and insomnia and, in rare cases, may develop into life-threatening conditions if proper precautions are not taken.

Your arrival base should ideally be Gangtok at 1,650 m. From here, gradually increase your altitude from the next day onwards through destinations like Tsomgo Lake at 3,753 m and Nathula Pass at 4,310 m before venturing further into North Sikkim if you choose the extension. The rapid altitude gain from Gangtok to Nathula Pass within 4 hours can increase the risk of AMS if not managed with basic caution.

  • Keep yourself hydrated, as rapid altitude gain can lead to unnoticed fluid loss.
  • Do not increase your sleeping altitude by more than 300–500 metres per day.
  • Ascend slowly and avoid going from low altitude to above 3,000 m in a single day. Always take a rest day every 3–4 days to give your body time to adjust.
  • Consult a doctor before your trip and seek medical advice on medicines that may help with altitude sickness.
  • Do not consume alcohol or sedatives during altitude gain, as they can impair acclimatisation and reduce breathing efficiency.
  • If you notice any AMS symptoms, descend immediately and seek medical consultation.

Top 4 Gangtok City Experiences

1.MG Marg: Located at the heart of Gangtok, MG Marg is one of India’s completely pedestrianised road stretches with regular supervision. This is the hub of Gangtok’s social rhythm with evening lights; the local street food zone, Khau Gully; and markets like Lal Bazaar on the eastern side. This makes for the perfect opportunity for a leisurely evening exploring the local markets while enjoying a casual food walk.

Best Time to Visit: In the evenings, the lights and stalls are all in full effect.

2.Gangtok Ropeway: One of the most popular attractions in Gangtok, this ropeway operates on the 1 km route of Deorali–Namnang–Tashiling for 15-20 min and gives you beautiful overhead visuals of Gangtok and its surrounding beauty. The valley, the nature, the market and the State Assembly Hall of Sikkim, making it perfect for first-timers, couples and photographers.

Operating Hours: Daily, 9:00 am to 4:30 pm or 5:00 pm, depending on weather conditions

Gangtok Ropeway Cost: INR 120 per adult return and INR 60 for children under 6; Videography or photography costs an additional INR 50

Best Time to Visit: March-May and October-December (clear visibility with comfortable outdoor temperatures)

3.Rumtek Monastery: Located 24 km from Gangtok, Rumtek Monastery serves as the seat of the Kagyu School of Tibetan Buddhism. The Black Crown ceremony, deemed an extremely sacred Vajrayana ritual and performed by the Gyalwa Karmapa, is conducted in this monastery. With the original monastery destroyed in 1959, Rumtek Monastery was rebuilt in 1966 on a larger and grander scale with skilful artwork all over, when compared to the original monastery.

Operating Hours: Daily, 6:00 am-6:00 pm

Entry Fee: INR 10 per person

Visitor Requirement: Government-verified photo ID (Aadhaar card, Voter ID, driving licence, or passport)

4.Enchey Monastery: Enchey Monastery is located at a distance of 2.2 km from Gangtok, making it AMS-safe. It serves around 90 monks and is known for its architecture, Kanchenjunga views and annual Chaam dances. The Pang Lhabsol festival, unique to Sikkim, is celebrated in this monastery to worship Mount Kanchenjunga as the state's guardian and protector. Note that admission to visitors might be restricted during private ceremonies or events.

Operating Hours: 9:00 am-5:00 pm

Festivals: Pang Lhabsol is held in the 7th Tibetan month every year (August/September); Detor Cham masked dance occurs during the 18th and 19th days of the 12th Tibetan lunar month (usually January/February).

Entry Fee: No entry fee

Gangtok: The Base of Sikkim Tour Extensions

Gangtok is the heart of Sikkim and provides connectivity and permit issuance to all PAP and ecotourist zones. If you have 5-7 days for your trip, you can easily add a Darjeeling or North Sikkim extension to your Gangtok tour.

Here are our travellers’ favourite Gangtok extensions for their trip, based on Thrillophilia’s 2026 booking data.

1.North Sikkim: Lachung, Yumthang Valley, and Gurudongmar Lake

If you love mountainscapes and high-altitude terrains, you should add a North Sikkim extension to your trip. With its raw Himalayan landscapes and high-altitude destinations like Gurudongmar Lake, one of the highest lakes in the world at 17,100 ft, along with Yumthang Valley, Zero Point, Lachung, and Lachen, North Sikkim is perfect for both solo travellers and couples alike.

Thrillophilia Note: North Sikkim has multiple protected zones, which require pre-approved permits. Make sure all your permits are ready at least 2-3 days in advance. Acclimatise to your altitude gain while travelling to North Sikkim to ensure the prevention of AMS.

2.Darjeeling Circuit: Gangtok + Darjeeling with the Occasional Kalimpong

If you are short on time, a Darjeeling extension is the easiest and fastest one of all. Located at a height of 2,045 m, it is known for its tea estates, toy train, and beautiful views of Kanchenjunga.

Thrillophilia Note: If you are travelling with family, especially children or senior citizens, Darjeeling is perfect for you, as its AMS risk is nominal.

3.West Sikkim (Pelling): The Kanchenjunga Viewpoint

Pelling is home to the best views of Mt Kanchenjunga at a height of 2,150 m. The best panoramic viewpoints in Pelling include Upper Pelling Helipad, Pelling Sky Walk, and Pemayangtse Monastery. It’s perfect for travellers wanting to have a slow-paced, relaxed journey or specifically want Kanchenjunga views.

Thrillophilia Note: You get the clearest views in the mornings, especially in October-November and March-May.

Best Time to Visit Gangtok

1.March–May (Spring)

With temperatures of 10°C–22°C, this window offers clear skies and ideal weather for sightseeing. The weather is comfortable and perfect for North Sikkim tourism, rhododendron blooms, and orchids, especially during the Flower Festival, where you can observe 600+ orchid species. With clear visibility, you can experience some of the best views of the Kanchenjunga range during this season, making it one of the peak times for a Gangtok trip. This season also sees a 20–30% price hike due to high demand.

Seasonal Festivals: Losar (Tibetan New Year) and International Flower Festival (May, held at White Hall Convention Centre)

Best for: Couples, families, and groups

2.June–August (Monsoon)

This season is more humid, with temperatures of 8°C–25°C and frequent rain. Visibility is minimal, but the natural greenery is lush and rich, and waterfalls are at their fullest due to the rainfall. Nathula Pass and Tsomgo Lake access is often restricted or suspended because of unfavourable weather and road conditions. If you want to enjoy a budget-friendly leisure holiday without specific expectations for mountain-range views or outdoor exploration, this window can still be considered. Be cautious of landslides, roadblocks, and delays on the NJP–Gangtok route during this season.

Seasonal Festivals: Saga Dawa (Buddhist Festival) and local monastery events

Best for: Budget-conscious travellers and offbeat travellers

3.September–November (Post-monsoon)

With temperatures of 10°C–20°C, the weather remains crisp, stable, and clear for all sightseeing activities. The previous season enhances Gangtok’s greenery even further, while North Sikkim access is usually clear of weather-related restrictions. This is the ideal season if you want sharp views of the mountain range, especially for photography, and it is highly suitable for all major routes. Prices, however, remain inflated due to increased demand.

Seasonal Festivals: Durga Puja (major East India travel spike), Diwali, and Dasain (Nepali festival)

Best for: First-timers and premium travellers

4.December–February (Winter)

If you want a snowy winter experience, Gangtok records temperatures of 2°C–12°C during this season. Tsomgo Lake is ideal for snow experiences, with frozen landscapes across Gangtok and the surrounding regions. Weather disruptions are common during this window, with limited mobility in certain areas. Nathula Pass is frequently closed due to heavy snowfall, and Tsomgo Lake may face temporary closure depending on weather conditions. Higher altitudes offer an even stronger winter experience, but the AMS risk is also higher during this period, so consult a doctor before planning your trip in this season.

Seasonal Festivals: Christmas & New Year, Maghe Sankranti, and Losoong (Sikkimese New Year)

Best for: Travellers seeking winter experiences, and off-season luxury

North East India is underrated and Thrillophilia packaged it in a way that made it accessible without losing the rawness of the region. Dzukou Valley in Nagaland, Loktak Lake in Manipur, the tribal villages. These are not on typical tourist circuits and yet Thrillophilia had everything organised and smooth. A trip that changed my perspective on travelling within India. Thanks to Rahul from the sales team for designing such a wonderful itinerary for us and for continuously checking in on us throughout the trip.

Sikkim and Meghalaya together through Thrillophilia. The Yumthang valley in bloom was spectacular. Gurudongmar Lake at 17,000 feet left us speechless. All permits were sorted in advance. The team had local knowledge that made a real difference. Highly recommend for anyone wanting to explore the North East.

We booked with Thrillophilia for a 9 days trip to Gangtok and Darjeeling. Our contact person Gautam with whom I did the booking was available throughout the trip.. We had a partial booking of our hotel stay as we had a voucher from Karma club and the rest of the trip was to be orgbaised around it. Still they did a great job of it. Hotel rooms were decent but could be better. They have a tie up with Ankita holidays for North East. The local person Mr Shambu Singh kept in touch daily to check and updated us with the driver details etc. Overall a good trip. We enjoyed it...

Sikkim family holiday was perfectly designed the right mix of nature, culture and comfortable pacing for kids. The toy train from New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling was pure nostalgia. Gurudongmar Lake at sunrise with the Himalayan backdrop was one of the most beautiful things I have ever witnessed. Thrillophilia added an unexpected yak ride at Tsomgo Lake for the kids which they absolutely loved. Very well planned trip for my family

Gangtok Tour faqs

Can I combine Gangtok with other destinations?

Yes, in fact, most travellers naturally combine Gangtok with nearby regions because Gangtok acts as the main access point for permits and transport coordination.

Popular extensions include North Sikkim, West Sikkim, and Darjeeling, making Gangtok both a destination and a strategic travel base for larger Himalayan itineraries.

How do I reach Gangtok?

Gangtok can be reached conveniently by air, rail, or road depending on your preferred route and budget. Travellers usually arrive via Pakyong Airport (closest to Gangtok) or Bagdogra Airport (more frequent flight availability), followed by a taxi transfer to Gangtok. Travel time from Pakyong is usually 1–1.5 hours, while Bagdogra takes around 4–5 hours depending on traffic and weather conditions.

If travelling by train, the nearest major railway stations are New Jalpaiguri (NJP) and Siliguri, from where shared and private cabs operate regularly throughout the day. During peak seasons, advance transport booking is strongly recommended for smoother arrivals.

Is there any dress code in Gangtok?

Gangtok does not follow any formal dress restrictions, and visitors can wear comfortable travel clothing throughout the city.

However, when visiting monasteries or religious spaces, modest dressing is recommended out of cultural respect. Layered clothing remains the most practical choice because temperatures can shift noticeably between morning, afternoon, and evening.

Is alcohol available in Gangtok?

Yes, alcohol is easily available in Gangtok through licensed stores, restaurants, and hotels. Sikkim is known for comparatively lower alcohol taxation than many Indian states, which makes prices relatively accessible.

That said, travellers heading toward high-altitude zones should avoid alcohol before or during mountain travel, as altitude adjustment and dehydration can become more uncomfortable when alcohol is involved.

Is vegetarian food available in Gangtok?

Yes, Gangtok offers strong vegetarian availability, including Jain-friendly meal options in many restaurants and cafés.

Budget travellers usually spend around $2–$4 per meal, while mid-range dining ranges between $5–$10 depending on location and cuisine type. Outside Gangtok city, vegetarian choices become more limited, so meal planning helps during longer excursions.

Is Gangtok suitable for first-time hill travellers?

Yes, Gangtok is widely considered one of the easiest hill destinations for first-time travellers because it combines good infrastructure, safety, scenic value, and manageable logistics.

It offers a strong balance between mountain atmosphere and urban comfort, which makes it especially suitable for families, couples, and travellers new to Himalayan destinations.

What common mistakes should I avoid during a Gangtok trip?

The most common first-time mistake is trying to cover too many places in too little time. Mountain travel often takes longer than expected due to curves, traffic control, and weather shifts.

Other avoidable mistakes include:

  • not carrying enough cash for remote stretches
  • delaying taxi bookings during peak season
  • ignoring permit timing requirements
  • underestimating weather changes

A well-paced itinerary usually creates a much better Gangtok experience than an overloaded one.

Why is ID proof required frequently during a Gangtok trip?

Sikkim shares an international border with China and includes multiple protected tourism zones under active administrative monitoring.

Because Gangtok functions as the permit-processing centre for several restricted regions, identity verification is required regularly for both safety and regulatory reasons. Carrying a valid government-issued ID at all times helps avoid delays during permits, hotel check-ins, and checkpoint movement.

Are ATMs and UPI available in Gangtok?

Gangtok has good ATM access and widespread UPI acceptance, especially in markets, restaurants, and hotels. Most urban establishments support digital transactions comfortably.

For remote excursions outside the city, carrying cash remains important because smaller local operators and mountain-side stops may not always have digital payment facilities.

Is Gangtok expensive?

Gangtok is considered one of the more budget-friendly hill destinations in India when planned correctly.

A practical budget trip generally ranges around $180–$300 per person, while a comfortable mid-range experience often falls between $360–$540 depending on hotel level, season, and route extensions. Costs rise mainly during peak holiday windows and permit-heavy itineraries.

Are network and internet reliable in Gangtok?

Within Gangtok city, travellers usually experience stable mobile connectivity, strong WiFi access, and smooth digital payment support in hotels, cafés, and most public areas.

However, in higher-altitude regions such as Lachung, Lachen, and the Nathula route, connectivity becomes weak or unavailable due to terrain and limited tower coverage. It is advisable to download maps, keep offline confirmations, and inform family before entering remote zones.

What should I pack?

For most months, light woollens, layered clothing, and comfortable walking shoes are sufficient. In winter, heavy jackets, gloves, thermal layers, and water-resistant footwear significantly improve comfort, especially for high-altitude day trips.

Because mountain weather changes quickly, carrying one waterproof outer layer is always advisable regardless of season.
