St. Cuthbert Overview

The simplicity of the St. Cuthbert shrine contradicts its original appearance, which is lavish. It is said that the one of the many jewels which decorate the shrine is worth millions of dollars. The St. Cuthbert’s shrine base was constructed of expensive green marble and covered with gold. Four seats are places at the base where pilgrims can kneel to receive blessings.

St. Cuthbert's shrine is covered with an expensive embroidered cloth, which is raised on special occasions to expose the beautifully decorative shrine. The gilt cover of the shrine portrays Christ as a baby being carried by Mary on one side and Christ on a rainbow on the other.

Edges of clothes have six silver bells that tingle when the cover is lifted. It is done to draw the attention of people in the shrine. The present cover of the shrine is not a cloth and is inspired by the 16th-century shrine cover.

The treasure at St. Cuthbert is a rare collection of Anglo Saxon artifacts, including garnet Pectoral Cross, gold, and the symbol of Durham Cathedral. All these were revealed in the open treasure gallery.

The launch of the treasure marks the new phase of life of St. Cuthbert. The treasure of St. Cuthbert and the exhibition of jewels will not only boost the community but will keep attracting visitors as it is among the beautiful places to visit in Durham.
