James' Park is a prominent feature of the skyline in Newcastle. A chapel and hospital called St. James' once stood near the site of what is now the Hancock Museum in Newcastle. For a period of 99 years beginning in 1542, the master of St. Mary's and St. James offered a lease on various parcels of land and plots, including the area around Castle Leazes.

By the early 19th century, the area around the football stadium had expanded to include St. James Place, St. James Street, and St. James Terrace and Leazes Terrace. After the first game played there in 1880, it was clear why the venue was quickly dubbed St. James' Park.
