Historic Chester Rows Overview

The heritage zone of the Chester Rows is the unique architecture belonging to the mediaeval times which is built on the four important streets of the city finally meeting at the Chester Cross. The rows have been in Roman style, and have passageways which lead into the shops built on the streets.

The Historic Chester Rows are a set of four half-timbered galleried walkway structures built on all of the four main streets of Chester. The walkways are covered and run above the street level shops, the second tier and other premises, which were built in the 13th century. Listed at top amongst the must places to visit in Chester, the Chester rows are unique in Western Europe.

The rows were built in the four main streets attached to the ‘The Chester Cross’, in an architectural style inspired from that of the Romans. They had formed an important architectural structure at the centre of the city due to which the rows would deeply influence the plan and layout of the city of Chester. At the shops located in the passageways of the Chester rows, there are almost 300 commercial businesses operating which are a mix of local retailers, independent outlets and community spaces.
