Dragon’s Den Overview

The Dragon’s Den is a spectacular stone and cave formation underneath the Wawel Hill that is significantly associated with the Smok Dragon legend. After its discovery in the 16th century, scores of tourists throng the place to explore it, and to learn about the story that goes behind it.

The Dragon’s Den is a spectacular limestone formation found underneath the Wawel Hill in Krakow. Its serene ambience, eerie caves and crawl spaces are what attract scores of tourists everyday. 

Apart from its manifestable beauty, the legend that goes behind this cave is what makes it a significant location to visit. According to this Cracocian legend, there was once a beastly dragon called the Smok or Wawel Dragon that resided in these caves. It used to feed on the animals and young women of the town, and when there were no maiden in the town left, the only option left was the king's daughter. The King promised his daughter’s hand in marriage to any man who would exterminate the dragon. A man named Krak successfully lured the dragon into eating chemicals and eventually the dragon died. 

Today, the cave is an important site for tourist activities, and remains open only in the months between April and October.
