Spiti Weather ( Season Wise Guide)

01

Spiti in Summer

The summer season in the valley, that is, the months between April and July are considered to be the best time to visit the region. This is because when it comes to sightseeing in Lahaul and Spiti, Weather is an extremely important factor you need to consider. And, summers are perfect for the fun and adventure activities planned in the valley.

This is the time when the snow in the valley starts melting and you can drive on the trans-Himalayan roadways without any danger. In fact, the peak tourist season for visiting the valley is in June, when the Manali-Kaza highway opens up. As the harsh winters of the Himalayas take a step back, it gives way to sunny days, warm weather, and a pleasant environment when you can enjoy the pleasing landscape to its maximum.

Summer is also the season for participating in the various adrenaline-pumping activities planned here. After the ice on the rivers melts, you can enjoy river rafting, and also go for rock climbing, camping, paragliding and mountain cycling without any fear of avalanches.

Additionally, it is also the time when various carnivals and festivals are held in the valley, where you can see how the natives of the region celebrate love, life and everything in between. Hence, it is highly recommended to plan your visit to the valley during summers. The best places to visit the valley during this season are – Kunzum pass, Dhankar monastery, Pin valley national park, Chandratal lake.

Spiti in Monsoon

Send Enquiry
Since the valley is located in the foothills of the Himalayas with the shadow of the mountains just covering the region, it is no wonder that Spiti Weather is greatly affected  by the mountains, especially in monsoons. Due to its strategic location, the valley did not receive any rain at all until recently.

But global warming has changed a lot of this, and in the last few years, the Spiti Valley has seen many instances of cloudburst, followed by overcast weather and heavy downpour going on for days. But these instances are rare, and most of the time, there is next to no rainfall in the region. However, this is only applicable to Spiti Valley - to be precise, the area between Puh and Batal. If you are starting your journey from Shimla, you will have to face rain in the monsoon season until Kinnaur valley, Manali and Rohtang Pass.

Due to the rough terrain in these regions, paired with heavy downpour – it is also common to see dangerous avalanches on the roads leading up to Kinnaur. The roads near Karchham and Reckog Pao, for example, should be avoided especially because of the terrible state they get in when it starts to rain. Massive landslides can also occur, blocking the roads and leading to felling of trees and pillars. Moreover, due to the presence of water on the roads, they become frictionless and it is no longer safe for travelers to drive here.

Despite all this, if you do want to visit the valley during this season, it is imperative that you get familiar with all the precautions and warnings. It cannot be denied that the valley is cloaked with an unearthly charm during this season, and the brutal weather only reveals its most pristine beauty. Perhaps that is why some daredevils do like to visit the valley during this season. To the end, you must make sure that all your belongings are covered in waterproof layering, and if you are traveling by car, you should not put anything on the roof. Additionally, make sure you are traveling in an SUV that can handle the rough roads and slushy paths.

Average Temperature day and Night: The average temperature in the valley during the day in monsoon season is 10-15 degrees, and at night, it can be 3 to 4 degrees Centigrade.

Average Rainfall: 45 mm

Spiti in Winter

Spiti Valley Weather during the winter season, that is, between November and  February is so brutal that the place is entirely cut off from the rest of the country during this season. The entire neighborhood of Ladakh, including the Spiti valley, is doused in darkness and snow during this time of the year. For these few months, the dramatic and stark landscape of the valley is covered in a thick layer of pure white snow.

Temperatures at night can drop way below zero degrees, and the entire valley experiences endless snowfall. In fact, the snow can be so relentless that the road from Manali to Kaza is closed during this time of year due to blockage. As a result, most people have to enter the valley via Kinnaur route from Shimla.

Due to the heavy snowfall, low temperatures, and no tourists – most of the hotels and homestays are closed in the valley during this season. The road transport is also not that reliable, although you can probably get some taxis. Only a few parts of the valley are accessible during this season, like Lhalung, Hikkim and Dhankar.

Due to these extreme conditions, most people don’t prefer to visit the valley during this season. But the daredevils who want to wander through the frozen hearts of Himalayas, Spiti in winter definitely has a charm. The snow covers every visible surface, and the entire valley turns into a winter wonderland. However, if you plan to go here in such weather, you should be prepared for the extreme cold and difficult weather too.

Average Temperature day and Night: Spiti Valley Temperature during the winter season, on average, is 0 degrees Celsius during the day, and at night, it can be -20 to -30 degrees Centigrade.

Best Time for Road Trip to Spiti Valley

10

Shimla to Kaza Route

Send Enquiry
The best Spiti Weather for a road trip via Shimla is during June when the weather is warm. This is because the environment of the valley becomes pleasant and warm during this time and sightseeing is much more pleasing. However, the main reason it is recommended to go road tripping during summers is that the Hindustan Leh highway becomes less dangerous to drive on during this season.

This highway constitutes the majority of the route to the valley, and it has been deemed as one of the most dangerous roads in the world due to its rough terrain. But when the snow melts and the weather clears up in summer, this road is comparatively easier to traverse.

So, unless you are an experienced driver who can handle extreme cold, freezing temperatures, snow, and a rough terrain at the same time – it is better to road trip via this highway only during summers.

Manali to Kaza Route

The best time to undertake a road trip to the valley via the Manali-Kaza route is during June to mid October, when the weather is warmer. This is because the Rohtang pass, which is the pass that connects Kullu to Spiti valley, is closed in the winter, that is November to April this is because of heavy snowfall in the region that makes it impossible to cross the pass. as a result, for at least half the year, it is impossible to take this route to reach the valley.

As for July to October, the valley does not see any rainfall, but Manali, Rohtang Pass and Kinnaur experience heavy rainfall in these months. The road conditions of these regions are not good enough to allow driving during these months. Plus, they also see avalanches and landslides in this season. Thus, it is quite dangerous to be on the road during this time. Road blockages are quite common in these regions, and often, avalanches can lead to falling of trees and pillars that can lead to accidents.

That is why the best time to visit the valley is between June to Mid October. Besides, Spiti Weather during these months is also pleasant, warm, and ideal for road tripping.

Note: This route gets operational (from 2nd half of June to 1st half of October)
