    Another option to reach Tawang is hopping on a bus or taxi to reach Tawang. Otherwise, you can also opt for railway and roadway to reach Tawang. Though the journey to reach Tawang may be long, the scenery you come across along the route makes it amusing.

    You can reach Tawang in following ways:

  • 01 By Air

    If you are planning to fly to Tawang, unfortunately, there is no airport close to the town. The nearest airport, Sonibari Airport,  is located in Tezpur. The road distance between Tezpur and Tawang is 330 km, so the journey takes 10 to 12 hours.

    You can get a flight to Tezpur from major cities like Kolkata and Silchar. However, Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport in Guwahati, is a better option as it is well connected with major cities of India. Regular direct flights from major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Kolkata are available to reach Guwahati Airport.

    Airline Services like Spice Jet, Air India, Jet Airways operate here. Tawang has good connectivity with both Tezpur and Guwahati. So, after landing in Tezpur or Guwahati, you can conveniently travel to Tawang from there by taking a bus or hiring a cab.

    Despite being a more expensive option than railway and roadway, airway is the most convenient option to travel to Tawang.
  • 02By Train

    There is no major railway station in the vicinity of Tawang, so it is not possible to reach the town directly by train. The nearest major railway station to Tawang is Rangapara Railway Station located in Tezpur.

    It is located at a distance of 314 km from Tawang, and is connected with major cities like Kolkata, Delhi, Chennai, etc. From here, you can easily find a taxi or bus to travel to Tawang. Another major railway station closest to Tawang is Guwahati Railway Station. Being the largest city in Assam, Guwahati has many trains running to and from almost all major parts of the country.

    The road distance between Guwahati and Tawang is 440 km, and can be covered by travelling in a bus since regular buses run between the two cities. You can also hire a cab to reach Tawang from Guwahati. Although that may cost you a little more than a bus.
  • 03By Road

    The enchanting Himalayas make the way to Tawang a delight to witness. The unwinding road leading to Tawang is extraordinarily beautiful, especially during winters. So, if you have time and patience to enjoy little joys of life, it is a good idea to reach Tawang by roadway.

    The last stretch of the journey to Tawang is anyway a roadway even if you are travelling by a train or aeroplane since there is no airport or railway in station closer than Tezpur. You have the following means of transportation to reach Tawang as far as roadway is concerned:

    Bus: Due to the unavailability of any airport of railway station in Tawang, excellent bus connectivity has been developed between Tawang and other major cities nearby. So, you may easily find a bus or taxi from cities like Guwahati, Tezpur and Silchar to reach Tawang. Bus services to Tawang are also available from Bhalukpong, East Kameng, Nagaon, and Itanagar.

    Car: Sharing taxis to Tawang are available in Guwahati and Tezpur. It is a good option to reach Tawang as it will cost you much lesser than a private taxi. Private taxis to Tawang are readily available in Guwahati and Tezpur. If you are travelling with family or in a group, a private cab is an ideal option.

Tawang Monastery

Famous as the largest monastery in India, Tawang Monastery is one of the most incredible places to visit in Tawang. Also famous as Galden Namgyal Lhatse, Tawang Monastery is one of the most holy sites for the faith of Mahayana Buddhism. Belonging to the Gelugpa sect of Buddhism, Tawang Monastery is home to over 300 monks and holds 17 gompas in the region.

Jaswant Garh
