This place is the ideal escape from the bustle of the city because it offers breathtaking sunset views.

3. Dzukou Valley, Nagaland/Manipur

A high-altitude valley between Nagaland and Manipur, Dzukou Valley is well-known for its verdant meadows and seasonal wildflowers, particularly the rare Dzukou lily. Trekkers come here to enjoy the stunning views, refreshing mountain air, and serene paths that provide an oasis from the usual tourist crowds. The valley is a haven for hikers and people who enjoy exploring natural beauty, with its beautiful surroundings of rolling green hills and mist-covered scenery.

4. Nathula Pass, Sikkim

Nathula Pass is a high-altitude mountain pass which is located near Gangtok, along the Indo-China border. At 14,140 feet, it's one of the few locations where the Indo-China trade route is open to visitors. The journey is breathtaking, with views of the Himalayas and roads blanketed with snow. Due to its historical significance and breathtaking beauty, it is one of the most visited attractions of Sikkim.

5. Tsomgo Lake, Sikkim

Changu Lake, another name for Tsomgo Lake, is a glacial lake situated around 40 kilometres from Gangtok on the way to Nathula Pass. The lake changes color with the seasons, featuring lush green shades in warmer months, and usually freezes in winter, surrounded by rocky mountain terrain, making it a stunning sight the whole year. By the lakeside, visitors enjoy yak rides and gaze at the snow-capped peaks reflected in the lake.

How to reach the Northeast from Chennai

With so many travel options, including flights, trains, and well-connected road routes, getting to the North East from Chennai is now easier than ever.

1. By Air: Fastest and Most Convenient Option

The best way to begin your Northeast tour from Chennai is by air, which provides easy access to the area. Major airports such as Guwahati (Assam), Imphal (Manipur), and Bagdogra (West Bengal, for Sikkim) are well-connected through stops in metros like Kolkata or Delhi, despite the absence of direct flights.
Guwahati Airport's great connectivity and close proximity to Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh make it the most popular entry point for North East itineraries. From there, you can take a connecting flight to more places like Aizawl, Agartala, or Dimapur.

2. By Train: Budget-Friendly and Scenic Routes

Trains from Chennai to Northeast India run directly, making travel both economical and beautiful. Every week, the Nagaon Express (15629) travels 51 hours from Chennai Egmore to Guwahati. The New Tinsukia–Tambaram Express (15929), which links Tambaram and New Tinsukia, provides another option. Due to limited availability and strong demand, reservations for your North East India tour from Chennai should be made well in advance.

3. By Road: Adventure Lovers' Delight

If you love road trips, the drive from Chennai to Northeast India is long but worth it. It takes about 3 to 4 days to reach cities like Guwahati or Gangtok, which are over 2,000 km away. Most travelers break the journey into stages, passing through Odisha, West Bengal, and Bihar. NH27 and NH16 are the main highways connecting South and Northeast India. For those seeking flexible travel, road journeys pair well with Northeast packages from Chennai for a scenic adventure.
