What is the meaning of the word Tawang?

The word Tawang is formed by the conjunction of two words from the Monpa dialect, namely “Ta” and “Wang”. While “Ta” means horse, “Wang” is indicative of green pasture land. The local tribes believe that in the 17th century, a Tibetan monk, Mera Lama saw a beautiful horse in the valley. Captivated by the beauty of the furry horse, Lama tried to capture him. But the horse suddenly disappeared. The monk kept searching for the horse and ended up at a serene spot. He fell in love with that surreal place and built a Buddhist Monastery at the same location. The town which developed around the monastery was later named as Tawang.
