Best Time to Visit Switzerland

01

Best Time for Sightseeing

The best time to visit Switzerland is within the months of April and October when the weather is pleasant and slightly warm. When it comes to virgin beauty and charm, no other country can beat Switzerland. The Swiss Alps, the alpine scenery, and the tiny, perfect villages will never cease to amaze you!

Sightseeing in Switzerland is a week-long task in the least! There is the Matterhorn, which is the highest peak of the Swiss Alps- a unique pointed peak! And on top of that lies the snow-clad village of Zermatt, which is a must go!

Then there are the cities of Zurich and Geneva, which have a number of natural beauties, museums, art galleries, and other buildings. You must also go to the alpine towns of Jungfrau and Lucerne for the best experience! But all this is done best when it is a little warm; Swiss towns are snow-clad most of the year.

You will be able to see all the towns, buildings and monuments at ease, without being obstructed by either rain or snow! However, April and October is also the peak season. So go towards the extreme ends of the time frame to get the best prices- mid-April or mid-October!
02

Best Time to Visit for Snow Sports

It is January and December when the snow is at its thickest, making it the best time to visit Switzerland for snow sports! Hundreds of people from around the world flock to this alpine country every winter to get the best of adventurous snow sports!

Skiing, snowboarding, snowshoe trekking- all of these are enough to give you an adrenaline rush! The best time for snow sports is in January and February. All the snow sports destinations in Switzerland open their doors in November and stay open till March.

But November and March do not see the best cover of snow! Skiing and snowboarding are not very safe in thin ice, so it's best to hit up the skiing hubs of Zermatt and St Moritz in January. Many destinations in Switzerland offer skiing and snowboarding opportunities, but these two top the list! St Moritz even allows snowshoe trekking- hiking in 3-4 inches of snow!

This is an activity reserved only for avid trekkers! Even Lucerne is an excellent location for skiing! In Zermatt, you could also try hiking up the Matterhorn- this is a moderate hike in winter! But all this is best done in January, under the thick snow cover!
03

Best Time for Honeymoon in Switzerland

The best time to visit Switzerland for your honeymoon could be in fall or early winter when you could enjoy fondue on a peak or take part in skiing! If you are romantic, Switzerland has the best options. So it’s best to start your married life from this picture-perfect country where you’ll get ample options to remain love-struck!

And needless to say, in a place as picturesque as Switzerland, romance is always in the air! For a honeymoon, there are two distinct seasons in which you should visit Switzerland. You could go in July and August when the weather is warm and pleasant, and all the valleys are green and blooming with exotic flowers.

Or you could visit in winter, in the months of December and January, when all the towns and valleys, even ones as low as 1200 m, are covered with snow! Generally, the best places for a honeymoon in Switzerland are Jungfrau, Lucerne, and Zermatt.

If you are going in summer, you should head for Lucerne and Jungfrau. The green valleys and lakes are mesmerizing. And if you are going in winter, the unanimous choice is Zermatt! Snow-covered and straight out of a fairytale, Zermatt will give you an unforgettable experience!
04

Best Time for Hiking

The best time to visit Switzerland for hiking is in April and May. This is the time when the snow melts, and you can hike up the short and medium trails, up to 6500 feet. This is the most exciting time for a hike because even though the snow has melted from the lower ridges of the mountain, the peaks are still snow-capped.

Also, the hikes offer panoramic views of the Swiss Alps and lush green valleys. Switzerland has quite a few famous hiking trails, which can give adrenaline junkies the time of their life! First and foremost is the hike to the Matterhorn in Zermatt, which is tricky and challenging, but a treat for the eyes when you reach the summit.

The other more accessible option is the Eiger trail near Interlaken, which is not very high and takes you atop another one of the country’s stunning peaks- the Eiger!
05

Best Time to Visit Lakes

The best time to visit Switzerland to see the magnificent lakes that dot this country is in summer. The months of May, June, and July are the best time to visit Switzerland as you can tour the lakes in the breeze and pleasant weather.

If you visit in winter, there is a good chance it will be too cold for you to take a stroll by the lake or go for a cruise in the lake. Lake Lucerne, Lake Zurich, Lake Thun and Lake Brienz in Interlaken and Lake Geneva are five of the most stunning lakes in the country and all offer cruises in summer.

In winter, some of the lakes on higher altitudes freeze, and the lower ones do not offer cruises anymore. So to really take in the beauty of lakes in the valleys and mountains, you must visit in summer.

Best Season to Visit Switzerland

06

High Season

Switzerland has a couple of high seasons like mid-June and mid-September when the weather is warm and pleasant, making the country packed with tourists. Because the country is so multifaceted when it comes to aspects of tourism, it has a high influx of tourists both in the middle of summer and in winter.

Mid-June to mid-September, there is high demand because the snow melts and the hiking trails are ready. Also, the tiny villages and valleys are lush green, and the flowers are in full bloom. On the other hand, in winter, the skiing towns nestled in the Swiss Alps are covered in inches of snow and ready to host tourists for snow sports like skiing and snowboarding.

Thus Mid-June to mid-September is the best season to visit Switzerland in its full glory.
07

Shoulder Season

Since Switzerland is among the top-rated countries in the world when it comes to tourist preferences, the prices are steep when it comes to high season(mid June and mid September). So the best of both worlds is the shoulder season when the weather is at its best!

In fact, it might be the best season to visit Switzerland if you consider traveling on a budget! This season lasts from mid-April to mid-June and from mid-September to mid-October. In this season, the weather is still pleasant though it may rain on a day or two. The hiking trails are clear, and even the lakes are at their best. You could avail of a cruise on any of the lakes during this season!
08

Low Season

If you want a low budget trip to the alpine country, then this is the best season to visit Switzerland! This season stretches from mid-October to mid-December and mid-March to mid-April. You will neither be able to hike nor ski, but this is the best time to visit Switzerland for sightseeing.

You will be able to take cruises in the lake, visit museums and monuments and dine at budget-friendly restaurants without having a massive crowd around you! However, if you are a skiing enthusiast or a trekker, this season is not the best for you as the snowfall is not good during this time of the year!

Best Time to Visit Switzerland by Month

09

January

This is the coldest month of the year in Switzerland and the best month to visit Switzerland if you wish to get the best of the skiing adventures and snowshoe trekking. The ice on the mountains is thicker than 3-4 inches, and hence this time is the best to try out snowshoe trekking if you are an avid trekker.

In cities like Zurich, the average maximum temperature during the day falls to 2 degrees, and at night the temperature is always sub-zero. In the skiing town of Zermatt, the ice coat is thick, and the temperature is sub-zero for almost the whole month! However, it is during this month that you can put on your best skiing effort at Zermatt or St Moritz.

Average Maximum Temperature: 2 degrees Celsius.
10

February

The first half of February has a temperature similar to January, except that the day continues for a while longer, and the average maximum temperature is 6 degrees Celsius. This is the best season to visit Switzerland if you have both skiing and sightseeing to do. You will have ample scope for skiing as the ice cover will definitely be around 70 mm.

You can also try snowboarding and snowshoe trekking. Since there is sunlight for a longer period of time, you have enough time for sightseeing as well, and you can spend more time outdoors. However, keep in mind that the nights will still have sub-zero temperatures, and as a result, you should be prepared with enough warm clothes for the night.

Average Maximum Temperature : 6 Degree Celsius
11

March

During March, you may find a few higher elevation ski resorts still operating, but by the end of the month, even they will get closed. March brings with it the arrival of spring, and the average maximum temperature soars right up to 11 degrees Celsius. It would be wise on your part to add sunscreen and sunglasses to your bag to avoid harmful UV rays in the mountains.

However, the nights can still get cold, with temperatures falling to a minimum of 3 degrees Celsius at night. This is the best month to visit Switzerland for sightseeing at a shoestring budget! Winter and ski season is over, and summer and hiking season is yet to arrive- so prices are low.

Average Maximum Temperature: 11 degrees Celsius.
12

April

There is not much activity to do in April as the snow melts completely, and the ski resorts get closed. It rains about half the month in April, but if you are lucky and the sun is shining when you are there, you may try a short hike through the valleys.

The beautiful flowers start blooming across the valleys and meadows this month because of the sunlight and rain. The average maximum temperature is 15 degrees Celsius, and the weather is pleasant. At night, the temperatures may still drop to 4 degrees, so it's better to bring warm clothes along with you if you’re traveling to Switzerland this month!

Average Maximum Temperature: 15 degrees Celsius.
13

May

This will not be the best month to visit Switzerland due to the unpredictable weather but you can still visit Switzerland during this season to admire the lush greenery. The silver lining in the cloud is that rates are low, crowds are less and you can roam around the beautiful cities without people swarming around like bees!

Average Maximum Temperature: 20 degrees Celsius.
14

June

Another warm month, with long days and short nights and on the winter solstice, there is sunlight till 9:30 pm at night! June is pretty unpredictable, just like May, and has its fair share of precipitation! The average maximum temperature rises to 21 degrees Celsius, but it may drop to 15-16 degrees after raining.

It is risky to hike in this weather, but this is a good time for sightseeing within cities- museums and monuments! But you must carry sunscreen and a waterproof jacket with you! You never know what kind of weather will be greeting you that day! However, this is the best month to visit Switzerland without crowds. Very soon, the peak season of July arrives with people arriving from all over the world.

Average Maximum Temperature: 21 degrees Celsius.
15

July

This is the best time of the year to visit Switzerland if you are an outdoorsy person! The weather is warm and pleasant, and the chances of precipitation are lesser than in June! You can enjoy all the beautiful sights of the country, and this is the best month to visit Switzerland to view the magnificent lakes scattered around the country!

You can buy tickets to all the open-air festivals and go for hikes to the Matterhorn or the Eiger! You can also visit Lake Lucerne, Lake Zurich, or Lake Geneva for a breezy afternoon. The average temperature is 24 degrees Celsius, so you can pack only summer clothes. However, the temperature may drop a bit in the evening, so make sure you pack a light sweater!

Average Maximum Temperature: 24 degrees Celsius.
16

August

Another warm month, but it brings with it a good amount of precipitation, close to an average of 120 mm. The average maximum temperature is 24 degrees Celsius, but in towns at a lower elevation, the temperature stays steady at 30 degrees. This is the best time to take advantage of the warm weather and take a dip in the lakes.

Swimming in the beautiful, crystal blue lakes of Switzerland is a popular activity in the summer months! However, when it does rain, it brings the temperature down quite a bit! Even then, the nights see a minimum temperature of 13 degrees Celsius. Pack summer clothes, swimsuits, and a waterproof jacket.

Average Maximum Temperature: 24 degrees Celsius.
17

September

This is the best time of the year to visit Switzerland if you don’t want to be in crowds and wish to explore the country in complete serenity! The first half of the month is pretty warm, and the average maximum temperature is as high as 24 degrees Celsius, precipitation is also lower than in August.

You can hike, enjoy strolls or dips in the lakes and also do a fair share of roaming around the valleys and villages, which are lush green this time of the year. All the flowers are also in full bloom, and hiking by the meadows will allow you to see a variety of pretty flowers!

However, during the second half of the month, the average maximum temperature dips to 20 degrees, and the nights may get as cold as 10 degrees Celsius! So pack a good mix of sweaters, jackets and summer clothes!

Average Maximum Temperature: 24 degrees at the beginning and 20 degrees at the end of the month.
18

October

A cool but pleasant month, when you are not likely to see as many people as in summer. The average maximum temperature dips to 14 degrees Celsius in this month so it would be wise to pack warm clothes. It might rain, which may bring the average temperature down to almost 7 degrees!

Make sure you pack in layers- it is the most effective way to protect yourself from the chill! But this is the best time of the year to visit Switzerland as the peak summer season has waned and winter season is yet to come!

Average Maximum Temperature: 14 degrees Celsius.
19

November

November brings snowfall in the higher elevations and so the ski resorts only in the higher elevations open their door to the tourists. But, the catch is that you never know in November if it will snow or not. So rather than snow sports, November is a good time to visit the valleys and quaint little Swiss villages before they are shrouded in the snow!

The tourists are few, and the prices of the lodges and flights will be lesser than the summer months! The average maximum temperature is as low as 7 degrees Celsius, and it can fall to a minimum of 2 degrees!

Average Maximum Temperature: 7 degrees Celsius.

All the towns, villages and resorts are brimming with people, and everything is decked up for Christmas and New Year! This is a magical time to be in this country! You can ski with your friends or dine with family- all the options are open in this month!

Average Maximum Temperature: 4 degrees Celsius.

Best Time to Visit Switzerland for Events and Festivals

21

New Year’s Day

If you are in Switzerland on New Year’s Eve, then you’ll get a chance to witness the country in complete vigour and celebration! This is the best time to visit Switzerland because all the ski resorts are open and the whole country looks like a scene out of a fairytale! But on New Year’s Eve, the entire nation lights up with decoration; there is music, dance, and celebration all around!

The two top places to celebrate New Year in Switzerland are Zurich and Interlaken. In Zurich, crowds gather around Lake Zurich to watch the spectacular fireworks and dance together! In Interlaken, the revelry goes on till 2nd January- there is a fireworks display at Hohematte, and then people flock to the lake for a music and dance show!
22

World Snow Festival

January is undoubtedly the best time of the year to visit Switzerland, and it is not just because of the luxurious ski resorts! In late January, in the quaint little village of Grindelwald, located at the foot of the Eiger mountain, a unique art festival takes place!

Here, for a whole week, artists and sculptors are hard at work to churn out hundreds of beautiful art sculptures! Started in 1983, this event attracts artists from all over the world! All teams are given 3-meter blocks of ice and allowed to create magic with it!
23

International Hot Air Balloon Festival

There is a reason why January-February is said to be the best season to visit Switzerland! It is because all the cool festivals and sporting ventures are available only during that period! And one of the most exciting events that take place in January is the International Hot Air Balloon Festival in Chateau d’Oex.

Started in 1979, this event is attended by participants of over 30 countries, and it takes place over nine days in the snow-covered valley of Chateau d’Oex! But the best part of the event comes on the 7th day when the balloons light up while hovering over the mountain! This is a treat for the eyes and is called a “night show”!
24

Tschaggatta

If you like all things unique and adventurous, then you would love the Swiss festival of Tschaggatta! This is primarily a Catholic festival in which people wear oversized masks and join a parade, walking through tiny villages in the Lotschental Valley of Switzerland!

The festival usually takes place in the last week of February, and multiple events are organized during this time! It takes place all over the valley where clumps of people do the parade in masks made from the Arvenholz tree, a conifer found in the Alps. One of the best parades happens at Blatten in the Lotschental Valley of Switzerland.
25

Fuchstival

This snow sports fest takes place towards the end of winter, in late March. It is held in the Grusch Danusa ski resort in Prattigau Valley. This is a family event, and a lot of group games involving skiing and snowboarding are held! And in the evening, there is a live performance by pop and rock bands for the attendees to enjoy! It is better if you book online to be a part of this fest you’ll get tickets at a cheaper rate!
26

Sechseläuten

This tops the list when it comes to quirky Swiss festivals- a unique spring festival that signifies the arrival of summer and the closure of winter! A huge snowman is built and loaded with explosives, and this structure is called the Boogg. The Boogg is lit at the bottom, and then everybody waits for the head of the Boogg to burst.

Traditionally, the time interval between lighting the Boogg and the head bursting is taken to be symbolic of how the summer will go! If the process is quick, the summer will be warm and sunny. If it takes long, then it will be a rainy, humid summer with less brightness! This festival usually takes place on the third Monday of April.
27

Fête De La Musique

This festival is a continuation of the Annual Music Day in Paris, that first took place on World Music Day (21st June) in 1982. This festival is the ultimate way to lift spirits, and Switzerland celebrates it with great pomp! The purpose of the festival is two-fold- firstly, it acts as a boost to aspiring musicians; you have platforms all across the country to perform whatever they like!

And secondly, it is used to treat the public to free entertainment- no fee is charged, and concerts take place in public places like parks, so that everyone, irrespective of social and financial status, can enjoy the music!
28

Rosenfest Weggis

The famous Rose Festival of Switzerland takes place annually in Romainmotier in summer. You can easily derive the center of attraction of the festivals- the queen of flowers, the rose. Hundreds of people come to showcase their plants or take part in flower arrangements.

Rose aroma soaps, essential oils, and perfumed salts are sold. The whole event looks like a happy summer carnival with music, entertainment, and food stalls that sell authentic Swiss fare!
29

Lake Thun Fest

This festival, which takes place at the banks of the serene Lake Thun at the foothills of the Eiger, has been adjudged one of the top ten open-air music festivals of Europe! It has been taking place in the same place every year since 2003 and attracts around 70,000 attendees every year!

Dozens of performers fly in from all over the world, and the top few Swiss musical productions are also showcased! Because of the high demand and the fact that it takes place in summer, it is better if you book your tickets well in advance!
30

Swiss Cheese Festival

The ideal event for cheese lovers- this annual festival held in Lucerne is quite like a cheese festival! Over 20 producers of cheese gather from all around the country and exhibit around 250 different types of cheese!

It has fun festivals related to cheese- like Full Moon Fondue and traditional Autumn Cattle Drives! Cow milking and cheese making competitions are also held, making this cheese festival an enjoyable one for all, young and old!
31

Vinea Le Salon Wine Fest

This event is a dream come true for every wine connoisseur- they get to spend a whole day tasting wine. Participants of this fest are given wine tours to augment their knowledge and learn about the different types of premium wine produced in Switzerland!

Not only that, but you are also taught about what food matches well with what kind of wine! If you are a novice, then this festival is the best place to find out what your poison is- red wine, white wine or rose! The event generally takes place in September or October in the town of Sierre in Switzerland.

The Mount Titlis Day Tour with Cable Car was a delightful experience for me. I was traveling with my spouse. The views were gorgeous and something that I can never forget about, it was dramatically gorgeous. If you are visiting Switzerland then Mount Titlis cable car ride is a great way to spend some time in the arms of nature and enjoy a great time. I was also able to capture some really good photos of the cute little snow penguins.

The best fun I had at night in Switzerland was with sulwald Sledding experience at Interlaken. The activities are really organized and the guide gives thorough instruction about the details of the night. I must say that these instructions can get really boring but the guide found a way to make it really fun. I and my partner I was able to get into the action really fast with Sledging which followed dinner. All in all, I must thank Thrillophilia for making our night adventurous.

The place is perfect for half a day trip. It takes around 5 hours to completely enjoy every part of the museum and it is the place worth visiting. Everything about the museum is great, I mean the first thought in my head when I heard the museum was boring but the Swiss Museum Of Transport is completely opposite. There are a ton of fun activities to do and cars to admire.

We took a ton of pictures and explored a number of ancient and modern transportation vehicles. Overall, a fun place to visit.
