Triveni Sangam

The meeting point or the confluence of three of the most important rivers in the Hindu religion, Triveni Sangam, is a holy place located in Allahabad. It is one of the most popular and sacred places to visit in Allahabad, and is often a host to some of the most important fairs and festivals of the religion.

The rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Sarawati meet at the Sangam. Due to the popularity of the region, the entire city of Allahabad is also sometimes referred to as Sangam. Every 12 years, an incredibly auspicious festival called the Kumbh Mela is organized at this location, while every six years, the Ardh Kumbh is hosted here.

Both of these festivals see a massive influx of tourists and locals to the Sangam. Hindus take a dip at the place where the rivers meet, believing that touching the holy water washes away the sins of all births. Khusro Bagh

Formerly a burial complex near the Allahabad junction railway station, Khusro Bagh is currently a walled garden typical of the Mughal construction. Khusro Bagh has three brilliantly designed sandstone mausoleums paying tribute to Mughal royals, including Shah Begum, Khusrau Mirza, and Nithar Begum, all of whom were related to Akbar’s son Jahangir.

Shah Begum’s tomb is designed in a similar style to Fatehpur Sikri with a three-tiered design. It is one of the most beautiful places to visit in prayagraj. Chhatris, arabesque inscriptions, and traditional Mughal motifs dot all of the three mausoleums.

The domed roofs also feature elaborate calligraphy by some of the ruler’s best calligraphers. Khusro Bagh is an important site to visit if you want to learn more about the Mughal history of India, particularly that associated with the ancient Prayagraj.

Anand Bhavan

In the 1930s, the original Swaraj Bhavan, today a famous Allahabad tourist place, was transformed into the headquarters of the Indian National Congress. As a result, Motilal Nehru had to buy another mansion for himself and his family to reside, and it was called Anand Bhavan.

Today, it is a historic house museum also home to the Jawahar Planetarium. European furniture and the most delicate quality china was sourced by Motilal Nehru to decorate this mansion and make it a replica of the original Swaraj Bhavan. Renovation of the enormous estate is said to have been done for over ten years.

Just like Swaraj Bhavan, this place also hosts many artifacts original to the Indian freedom struggle and meetings of the Negru family with many prominent freedom leaders. In 1970, the mansion was donated to the Government of India by Jawaharlal Nehru’s daughter Indira Gandhi. Since then, the government has been responsible for its maintenance.

Allahabad Museum

Established in 1931, the Allahabad Museum is one of the most important and grandiose museums of India. It is a place of national importance, housing significant artifacts from the modern historical period of India. Jawahar Planetarium

Situated beside the Anand Bhavan and built-in 1979, the Jawahar Planetarium is the perfect confluence of science and history. Allahabad Fort

This grand park was also called the Alfred Park or the Company Bagh during the East India Company’s rule. It was constructed in 1870 to commemorate Prince Alfred’s visit to the city of Prayagraj.

The All Saints Cathedral in Shillong, Meghalaya, stands as an architectural and spiritual marvel. Constructed during the British Raj in the early 20th century, this Anglican cathedral showcases a blend of colonial and indigenous architectural styles.

Swaraj Bhavan

Swaraj Bhavan is a large mansion that was once owned by Motilal Nehru and was the place of residence for the Nehru family until 1930. Today, it functions as a grandiose museum and is the most historically revered place to visit in Allahabad.

It is managed by the Jawaharlal Nehru Fund, New Delhi. Photographs of the Indian freedom movement featuring leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Azad, and the Nehrus are all displayed in the museum. Moreover, the Charkha owned by Mr. Gandhi is also displayed here.

Akshayavat

A fig tree sacred to the Hindu religion, the Akshayavat is enclosed within the walls of the Allahabad fort. According to a mythical legend of the Hindus, Sage Markandeya once asked Lord Vishnu or Narayana to demonstrate his powers to the world. In response, the lord flooded the entire planet, but even then, only the Akshaayavat could be seen above the water. It is one of the most religiously significant places to visit in Allahabad.

It is considered to be indestructible and is worshipped by Hindus around the world. When the British gained control of the Allahabad Fort, they restricted entry to the sensitive parts of the fort, and even today, people have to obtain special permission from the Fort authorities to visit the tree. However, on the day of the Kumbh Mela every year, the tree is open to the public and is worshipped by all.

New Yamuna Bridge

To minimize traffic over the old Naini bridge of the city of Allahabad, the New Yamuna bridge was constructed in 2004. It emerged as a cable stayed bridge built over the Yamuna river. Today, it remains extremely busy at all hours of the day. Private manufacturers built the bridge but it is maintained by the local authorities.

The bridge offers stunning views of the Yamuna river as you cruise on it. You can also take pictures of the marvelous construction of the bridge.

Sumitranandan Pant Park

Public Library

Formerly known as the Thornhill Mayne Memorial, the Allahabad public library is the best place to be for those of you who are bibliophiles or love literature. It is the most massive library in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and is situated in the famous Alfred Park.

The building is a grand reminder of the Scottish Baronial revival architecture style trademark of the British period in India. 125000 books, 40 magazines, and several newspapers are collected in the library and are open to public access on demand.

If for nothing else, go to the library to admire the beautiful architecture of the Scottish Baronial style. It was designed by Richard Roskell Bayne and features sharp pillars and turrets throughout. Bargad Ghat

Minto Park

Minto Park, better known as the Madan Mohan Malviya park, is a public park located in Allahabad. Earl Canning, in 1858, read out Queen Victoria’s proclamation at this very park, making it one of the most historically significant places to see in Allahabad. According to this historical proclamation, the power over India was shifted from the hands of the British East India Company to the Crown of Britain.

Revisit history while at this park and photograph the sprawling green locales of the park. In 1910, a stone memorial statue of a four-headed lion was placed in this park by Earl Minto, after whom the park came to be known later on.

The Bharadwaj Ashram is a temple and Ashram located in Prayagraj. This place is devoted to the story of Bhardwaj and how he brought the Ganges to the Earth. According to a mythical legend, after Ganga agreed to descend to the Earth, Bharadwaj prayed to Lord Shiva to catch Ganga’s flow before she fell onto the Earth just to avoid floods in the world.

As the name indicates, Shankar Viman mandapam is a holy temple dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva or Shakara. It is located to the North of the Triveni Sangam and the left bank of the river Ganges. The four stories of the temple are said to have been built in the memory of Adi Sankaracharya, a famous devotee saint of Lord Shiva. Clock Tower

Nagvasuki Mandir

According to ancient Hindu scriptures and the Bhagavata Purana, snakes have always been worshipped by the Hindus in various forms. The Vasuki Nag was a part of the life of Lord Krishna, a Hindu god. According to legends, he stole Krishna’s ball while he and his friends were playing.

Krishna later dived into the river where the Vasuki Nag lived to find the ball. After an intense battle, Krishna emerged victorious on top of the five-headed snake’s crown. The Nagvasuki temple is devoted to the Vasuki Nag. The idol is worshipped by devotees from around the country.

The temple also hosts several elaborate rituals throughout the year, making it a place for pomp and celebration at times.
