Going by the name of ‘Gunung Batur’ among the locals of Bali, Mount Batur is an active volcano which sits at 1717 meters above sea level. How To Reach

Denpasar Airport is around 39 km from Mount Batur and is connected by road. You can hire private taxis from Denpasar Airport that will take you directly to Kintamani. If you wish to travel by public transport, one can take a bus from Ubud to Kintamani. It is the cheapest mode of transport but takes around 2 hours.

Best Time To Visit

Trekking and Climbing at Mount Batur

1. The total distance from the base to the top of Mount Batur is around 6 km. It takes approximately 2 hours to reach the top of the summit. The trek is considered moderate and is the perfect trek for the beginners. 

2. Many people climb Mount Batur daily and some chose to opt for the guide while some climb by themselves. It is advisable to opt for a guide, as he or she is well-versed with the terrain and the weather of the mountain. Also, they can tell some of the popular stories and tales of Mount Batur and the surrounding areas. 

3. There are two peaks on Mount Batur. The first peak is the popular peak and it takes around 1-1.30 hours to reach the peak. The second peak is the top part of the volcano and from the base, it takes 2 hours to reach the peak.The second peak is a little difficult and tiring peak. From the top, you can see the crystal clear Batur Lake and the surrounding villages. 

4. The most popular trek is the sunrise trek which starts late in the night. Climb the mountain while the sky turns from black to blue and then yellow and orange. By the time you reach the top, you will see the magnificent sanguine sun, shining and showing its natural beauty.

Geography of Mount Batur

Mount Batur was formed due to a massive volcanic eruption that happened around 25,000 to 30,000 years ago in the ocean; this eruption resulted in the formation of the volcanic peak alongside a caldera on its top. Since then various eruptions have occurred near the mountain, the latest one being in 2000. One significant lava eruption happened in 1968, that created a lava field which is visible to date from Kintamani which is a small village near Mount Batur. 

Mount Batur is located alongside one of the most fertile regions of Bali, the Kintamani plane. The fertility of this region comes from Lake Batur making it the top producer of fruits and vegetables along with the largest bamboo producer in Bali.

The fertile region of Kintamani has paved the way for human settlement around the mountain with the current population of over 1000 people. The popular village of Toya Bungkah which is famous for its natural hot springs is also located near Mount Batur.

Tips for Trekking in Mount Batur

1. It is advisable to carry some light snacks and drinks for your trek. If you do not wish to carry, you can buy some from the warung (food stall) on the top of the mountain which serves some hot drinks and snacks. Though the snacks are overpriced, they are delicious. 

2. Always wear comfortable clothes like leggings, shorts or cargo pants as they provide the required comfort and wear comfortable trekking shoes.

3. The trek can be submitted without a guide but it is advisable to opt for a guide. One can opt for guides in approximately IDR 30,000

It is advisable to wear light and comfortable clothes. Also, avoid wearing Black color as it absorbs maximum heat. Avoid wearing jeans and woolen clothes.
