  • 08 Koh Samui

Travellers who discovered Koh Samui in the '80s have seen its transformation, a captivating paradise now lost to over-commercialisation. True, Koh Samui is no longer a sleepy backwater. But unlike parts of Phuket that have turned into tawdry destinations , Samui has retained a sense of style, an island chic encapsulating everything idyllic about a holiday in Thailand - luxury, spa treatments, cocktails and beaches. The tourist places in Koh Samui extend beyond the beautiful beaches the island is known for, though they are definitely attractive in their own right. If you want a break from all of that lounging in the sand, there are a host of unusual things to see, which make the most of the island's unique culture and charms. The tourist places in Koh Samui lean more towards the low-key, natural end of the scale, which best suits the whole island’s general ambiance. Why would you bother to visit a high-tech theme park when the whole island is your ambiance.? Instead you can enjoy some truly remarkable sites of historic, cultural and religious significance as well as sights of breathtaking natural beauty. For a little more quirkiness, check out the monkey show or the snakefarm.

Look for steaming street-side food stalls beyond the beach, backpacker shanties plunked down on quiet stretches of sand and hidden Buddhist temples along the backstreets. Koh Samui's repertoire of things to do and see is varied and interesting: the island hosts a great deal of splendid natural and manmade attractions from mummified monks to the famous grandma and grandpa rocks to attractive waterfalls and more, there's nothing to stop you having a blast on the Samui Island.
