Jispa Overview

Jispa is a small town located in Himachal Pradesh, and is often marked as an essential halt on a Leh-Manali trip. This quaint village has many features that allures travelers to stop here, including a famous Monastery, a small folk museum, and a helipad with a post office. Surrounded by Himalayan backdrop, the place is perfect for a city detox.

As a part of the adventure itineraries travelers follow on their Ladakh tours, they will choose to halt in Jispa, a mesmerizing village 20 km north of Keylong and 7 km south of Darcha along the most explored Leh-Manali Highway and on the banks of Bhaga River. At a height of 3200 meters, Jipsa is located and it is the major village in Lahaul district.

In the backdrop, the lofty Himalayan Mountains create alluring images. There are 78 households in the village and the population is calculated as 332 including 235 males and 97 females. Travelers take a stopover here to stay one night during their travel to Leh from Manali. There are camping grounds and many other stay options. The village is occupied with a helipad, post office and a monastery.

The small houses shimmering in the multiple colors of nature would leave everyone stunned. Jispa is simply adorned by the rugged mountain terrains in the background and the village seems so small when you see it from a distance as the towering Himalayas play the dominant role.

How To Reach

Best way to reach Jispa is to take a road trip here via Leh-Manali highway. One can take a local HRTC bus to reach a nearby village Keylong and from there you can take a local or private taxi to reach Jispa.

Or you can hire a taxi from Manali and reach Jispa directly via Leh-Manali highway, which has two different routes, one is through Rohtang Pass, and other is through Atal tunnel. It takes more time from Rohtang pass to reach Jisap compared to Atal tunnel, so plan your trip accordingly. 

There is no airport or railway station in Jispa, thus you can reach the nearby locations and take a taxi or bus to reach Jispa. 

Nearest railway station to Jispa is Chandigarh Railway Station, and nearest airport to reach Jispa is Kullu Airport.

If you are considering riding on your own to Jispa via Rohtang then get a Rohtang pass in advance for a smooth commute.

Best Time To Visit

The best time to visit Jispa is from April to September, when the weather is at its best, offering a pleasant setting for tourists to explore all attractions of the place. The clear weather will allow you to drive smoothly on the roads of Jispa and it's also one of the best times to go for a camping experience near the serene Bhaga river.

1.) Hotel Ibex: For a grand hotel stay equipped with basic modern amenities one can stay in this hotel which is located on the left side of the highway and is hard to miss due to its lighting and grand structure.

2.) Wooden Huts: The huts are located right in front of the grand Hotel Ibex, which is known for offering a leisure camping experience, as it is located near the Bhaga river, which is famous for its night camps. 

3.) Padma Lodge: It is a hotel which is known for its clean and cozy rooms. The place has two buildings offering fine dining space and a beautiful view of the Himalayan range.

Jispa is famous for its camping spots situated around the river Bhaga. One of the best camping spots is right in front of hotel Ibex, known as Wooden Huts. The place has several wooden huts installed, and is owned by a local resident. You can order food from him and relieve yourself from cooking. There are many other spots near the river where you can tug in your waterproof tents and cook some delicious food for yourself. Just relax by the peaceful setting of Jispa as you share stories and sing your favorite songs at the bonfire.

It is very common in Ladakh to find a Buddhist monastery, Jispa also greets its visitors with a famous Buddhist monastery that has been visited by Dalai Lama himself on his trip from Manali to Ladakh. All the Buddhist stupas are decorated with flowing Buddhist flags, making it a beautiful sight to witness on your Jispa trip.

A museum managed by the rural population of the town, where one can witness the amazing history of Tod Valley. There are ancient relics and handicraft items kept in the museum for visitors to explore and understand the traditions of the ancient Ladakhi population. How do I get to Jispa?

The best way to reach Jispa is through a  road trip by personal vehicle or HRTC buses, from Manali to Leh via Rohtang pass or Atal tunnel. The HRTC buses drop you at the nearby village known as Keylong, from where you can take a cab or private taxi to reach Jispa. It is best to travel with your vehicle, it will be little expensive but convenient.

Is Jispa open in December?

In December the place receives high snowfall and temperature can also fall below 0 degree celsius. The place is open in December but not many prefer to visit Jispa in winters. The route to reach Jispa makes all the difference, if the route is advisable to cross then you can visit Jispa via Leh-Manali highway.
