On this one-of-a-kind trail to the Potter Village at Vilacheri, you are part of a transformation journey as you watch mud go from the mundane to the sublime. Over 5 hours, get to walk through an entire village dedicated to making Navratri Kollu dolls and paper mache dolls, have intimate conversations with generations of potters, listen to innumerable mythical stories, and even get your hands soiled in making a toy or two.
This one day guided tour begins post lunch around 2:30pm. A short drive on an AC coach leads you to a village that takes pride in playing host to many gods. Upon reaching here, discover this fascinating little village create handmade mud dolls that ornate traditional Hindu households during Navratri. Witness their dexterity as they gently pack hundreds of dolls into a fire to bake them and observe their skill as they wield paintbrushes to bring a blush on an earthen cheek.
If interested, you can get into the shoes of a potter and take on the wheel for some quick lessons on creating your very own fashionable idols. Also get the chance to unwind by the lotus pond, which holds many unsaid stories. The stories connected to this place run the gamut of mythology, fantasy, history, and tradition. You begin your short walk early morning around 7am from the North Tower entrance of the Meenakshi Temple. Over the next two and half hours, this gripping walk will take you on an extraordinary journey of the flourishing market town that’s been in existence since 2nd century BC. Depending upon the group preference, you will be taken to places like Elukadal shopping complex and Marret Street. Invariably you will stumble upon spaces that were once the centre of power for many dynasties such as the famous Nayaks, or a seat of divinity from time immemorial. Curate all these for your very own storybook as you learn about the heart of Madurai, understand background of very many Indian beliefs, and get a sneak peek of way of life around here.
