Plaza de los Aljibes de la Alhambra Overview

The Plaza de los Aljibes is located in the heart of the Alhambra complex in Granada and its construction began in 1494 as decided by Iñigo López de Mendoza, Count of Tendilla. The plaza gets its name from the Aljibes, or water reservoirs, that are located here. It was originally used as a garden and a place for entertainment but today, it is one of the most popular places to visit in the Alhambra.

The Plaza de Los Aljibes is located in the Alcazaba of the Alhambra, which was founded in 1955 excavations. The Alcazaba began construction in 1494 and then expanded by subsequent rulers over the next few centuries. From this point, you can enjoy the sights of the city and Albaicín, the ancient Muslim neighborhood.

Behind them is the triangular Alcazaba which is a Moorish military complex built in the 13th century by the Nasrid dynasty on the footing of a Roman fort and a late-9th-century fortress. The plaza gets its name from the two Aljibes, or cisterns, that are located there. These cisterns were built to collect rainwater, which was then used to irrigate the gardens of the palace complex.

The Aljibes are made of stone and have a capacity of nearly 500,000 liters each. The Plaza de Los Aljibes is a beautiful spot to visit when exploring the Alcazaba. It's a good place to take a break and soak in the history of this ancient complex.
