About Iglesia del Sagrario

Proudly standing in the Plaza del Sagrario in central Granada, the Church of the Sagrario is one of the city's most impressive religious buildings. It was constructed in the 18th century on the site of the former major mosque of Granada, which was demolished after the forced conversion of the Muslim population, in 1501.

The church's exterior is characterized by its simple but elegant baroque style, with a creamy white façade adorned with various pilasters, entablatures, and pediments. The interior of the church is square in plan, on which a Greek cross is engraved, and whose capes end in the polygonal apse.

The transept is surrounded by a hemispherical dome, backed by four enormous posts formed by half columns of composite order. They provide portraits of the Evangelists, made of white marble by Vera Moreno.

The church also has a splendid neoclassical organ, constructed at the end of the 18th century. The organ can be discovered in the Church Choir, in front of the Altar Major, and above the main entrance door to the temple.
