Casa de Zafra Overview

The Moorish house of Zafra, built between the years 1400 and 1500, also known as the Casa de Zafra, is one of the many architectural marvels we can see in the Albaicin district. In this early example of Islamic architecture in the area of Granada, you'll find various properties owned by Hernando de Zafra, secretary to the Catholic Monarchs.

Located in the midst of the historic Muslim neighborhood of Granada, this Nasrid mansion dates back to the 14th century. It is a home that was once owned by a wealthy Andalusian family and has retained its original Arab character, down to the courtyard pool.

The House of Zafra, like most Arab homes, has a plain front in order to conceal the interior's lavish furnishings and fittings from the view of outsiders. A number of rooms are spread out over its two stories, and all of them have stunning views of the Alhambra.

The Albaicin Interpretation Center is located in the Casa de Zafra and features a number of exhibits and interactive panels that provide insight into the history of the Muslim quarter and present-day life in this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The exhibition takes a look back at Granada's past and the daily lives of the Albaicin's residents through a variety of images.
