Rabdentse Ruins Overview

A visit to the Rabdentse Ruins, an archaeological site, must be on your travel itinerary if you are visiting Pelling. Founded by Tensung Namgyal in the year 1670 AD, Rabdentse remained the second capital of the former kingdom of Sikkim till 1793 CE. The place was destroyed by the Nepalese invasion in the 18th century and transformed into ruins. Currently, the Archaeological Survey of India is maintaining and restoring the place.

The location is well known for its historical significance and scenic beauty. The ruins are surrounded by dense forest, and you will need to go on a 15-minute scenic trek to reach them. Once there, you will be rewarded with a spectacular vista of the Kanchenjunga range, the Pemayangtse Monastery and the rushing river flowing through the foothills. Explore the ruins and look out for its various attractions such as the Namphogang, the ruins of Taphap Chorten, the Dab Lhagang, and the remnants of Risum Gompa.

Best Time To Visit

By Car: Rabdentse Ruins is located 9.2 km from the nearest town, Pelling. You can hire a car and reach the location in 28 mins, travelling via Pelling - Sakyong - Gyalshing Road.

By Foot: You may opt to take a leisurely walk from Pelling to Rabdentse and reach the place in an hour. 

By Train: Take a train to New Jalpaiguri Railway Station, which is 127.4 km away from the ruins. You can reach the ruins by a hired car by travelling for 4 hr 15 min via NH10.

By Air: If you are travelling by air, you will need to reach Bagdogra Airport, which is 133.0 km from the attraction. From the airport, you will need to travel by car for 4 hr 13 mins via NH10 to reach the destination.

1.The Rabdentse Ruins is an archaeological site, and you must respect its historical significance by not causing any damage or littering.

2.The journey to reach the Rabdentse Ruins involves hiking through forested paths, hence you need to wear comfortable walking shoes.
