Arco dei Gavi Overview

Arco dei Gavi is a triumphal arch made of white stones, initially built on the Via Postumia in the first century. Its design and art make it one of the unique and rare things to see in Verona in Roman architecture history. Visit this monument to admire its ornate details and stunning design, which makes it eye-striking from all sides.

Arco dei Gavi is a beautiful Roman monument from the first century AD that honors the magnificence of the genus Gavia, a significant Veronese Roman family. Originally situated on the Via Postumia, the arch was demolished by French forces in 1805 and reassembled in 1932 using original stones in the open space next to Castelvecchio where it is still today.

The archway is four-fronted, providing access between the two sidewalks and over Via Postumia. The two main entrances are flanked by four Corinthian semi-columns and all four passages are covered by coffered ceilings. The arch also features several inscriptions of notable members of the genus Gavia family and the designer of the arch.

Under the arches, a section of the Via Postumia road was also reconstructed with black basalt. The cart's traces remain on the road, giving it its original appearance. The arch's eye-catching architectural design and artwork pull visitors in to take photos.
