Porta Vescovo Overview

The Porta Vescovo is a grand gate between the mediaeval city walls of Borgo Venezia and Veronetta. The gate was designed and built in 1520 and was given the name Vescovo since it originally collected a gabelle for the bishop. It features the architectural elements of the Renaissance, Venetians, and Austrians, making it one of the most stunning landmarks in Verona

Porta Vescovo between Borgo Venezia and Veronetta is the ideal blend of military security requirements and excellent aesthetic appeal for being both sturdy and stunningly beautiful. The gabelle that was previously gathered in the bishop's honour is what gave this gate the name.

Constructed in the Venetian era in 1520, the bridge has a square appearance that is complemented by white marble façade features that resemble Roman triumphal arches. It was later expanded by the Austrians, and in the 19th century, a guardhouse, a powder depot, and roadways and pedestrian pathways were added to it.

The bridge's two sides have diverse features: the one facing the city has a tuff and terracotta exterior with polygonal towers of Venetian style, while the side towards the east has a Renaissance setting. The two arches flanking the pedestrian entrances belong to the Austrian era. This gate has faced numerous restorations and additions but has kept its original charm, making it a stunning example of Venetian and Austrian military art.
