About Scaliger Tombs

The Scaliger tombs, a group of five Gothic burial monuments outside Verona's Santa Maria Antica church, honour the prominent Della Scala family. The monuments, which date to the 14th century, are renowned for their intricate ornamentation and Gothic style.

These tombs are designed like tiny temples, capped by a baldachin, ornamented with a stair motif, and contained in a wrought iron enclosure. The first tomb belongs to Cangrande I, the most illustrious member of the family lineage and the guardian of the poet Dante. It is attached to the exteriors of the church wall, has leashed dogs and also has a statue of Cangrande I riding a horse.

Next two prominent monuments are that of two angels honouring Mastino II, and Cansignorio, whose tomb is the most elaborate and features sculptures of combatant saints. The other two tombs are without a baldachin and honour Alberto II and Giovanni. After visiting these tombs, visiting the church will also let you enjoy the spiritual atmosphere and Romanesque architecture
