Soochipara Waterfalls Overview

Deriving its name from the needle-shaped rock that is placed here, Soochipara Waterfalls is one of the most photogenic spots for tourists in Wayanad. Also known as Sentinel Rock Waterfalls, Soochipara Falls is a gorgeous three-tiered waterfall in the Vellarimala mountain range of Wayanad.

The waterfalls can be reached after a thrilling downwards trek or enjoy the spectacular views from the tree-top hut. Soochipara Waterfalls is a refreshing retreat to indulge in activities too!

It is located at a distance of 24 kilometres from Kalpetta and 13 kilometres from Meppadi. Surrounded by lush deciduous and evergreen forests, this 200-metre waterfall is known as one of the best in the area. It's a must-visit location for those who want to fully appreciate Wayanad's natural splendour. 

You can also see the most beautiful tea plantations of Wayanad in this area. To get to the falls from the entrance, you need to hike down a well-maintained path for around 2 kilometres. This is an easy-level trip that takes roughly half an hour to complete. The waterfall forms a spacious pool at its base, ideal for swimming and bathing. Additionally, its neighbouring hills provide ideal hiking and rock climbing conditions. Another draw of the area is the treetop cottages, which offer a distinctive perspective of the Western Ghats valley.

How To Reach

1. By bus: You can catch a bus from Wayanad to the Soochipara Waterfalls. The buses will drop you off on the main road, approximately a kilometre from the waterfalls. From there, you can walk or take an auto to reach your destination.

2. By car/cab: Book a cab or self-drive to the falls from Wayanad. The distance is around 37 kilometres and it takes 1 hour to reach the falls.

Best Time To Visit

1. Best time of the day: Consider visiting the Soochipara Waterfalls early in the morning to enjoy it with fewer people. 

2. Best time of the week: Weekdays are ideal for visiting the falls as they usually have fewer crowds compared to weekends, offering a more peaceful experience.

3. Best season: The best time to visit Soochipara Falls is from September to March. During these months, the weather is pleasant with little rain. Also, this season sees the falls at their most majestic form providing a breathtaking sight for visitors.

1. Choose comfortable shoes or footwear for the trip as the terrain of the area is uneven and rocky. 

2. Avoid littering and throw your waste in the dustbins or bring a plastic bag or pouch to store trash and dispose of it later.

3. Follow all rules and warnings provided by authorities and guides at the waterfall area for your safety and convenience.

4. Respect the environment and do not pluck or collect rare and protected orchids, ferns and lichens along the way.

5. Bring along a water bottle, sunscreen, a hat or an umbrella to stay hydrated and shield yourself from the sun.
