HMS Unicorn Overview

HMS Unicorn has been titled as the most original old ship in the word, as it’s up to 200 years old and still considered the most remarkable historic ship. It has been preserved and put for a representation as a museum at Dundee, every year a good number of flocks of visitors visit this one of the most sought after tourist attractions in Dundee.

The iconic Unicorn was launched in 1824, it was constructed as a 46-gun frigate at Chatham Royal Dockyard for the purpose of war and was formed as a formidable part of the British naval force. The ship got its distinctive feature of the roof, which eventually made it unique when it was added as a protective covering was added much after its completion . Unicorn was quite popular in its early days due to its strength but in the 1860s trend, ironclad ships and stream propulsion had started. The new ships were considered more efficient in wars and after the innovation of ironclad ships the popularity of the Unicorn as a fighting frigate came to an end.

Therefore, it was retired off the warfront in the waters of Dundee where it arrived in November 1873, but continued to be utilised as a training ship for the Royal Naval Reserves. Visitors would hear more such stories about this national heritage, which is also one of the unique tourist attractions in Dundee. It played its role in a training ship up until the 1960s and then was moored on the waterfronts of Scotland, since then it has been in Dundee and has become the oldest landmark of the city.
