Mills Observatory Overview

Mills Observatory is the purpose-built public astronomical observatory in Dundee located on the summit of Balgay Hill. It enjoys a magnificent woodland setting along the river Tay which increases the charm of the place along with the fact that you can see the stars, moon, planets or just watch the universe using the advanced telescopes.

The strikingly beautiful classically styled Mills Observatory is a sandstone clad building which was built in 1935 for the purpose of an astronomical observatory. It has a classically styled ambience and a distinctive 7 metre dome, a small planetarium and several display areas. The observatory also has a good collection of telescopes some of which are quite exclusive like the Victorian refracting telescope.

The observatory proudly boasts of the beautiful collection of telescopes, the main telescope of the observatory is a 400mm Dobsonian reflector, it also has Victorian reflector, Cooke refractor with a focal length of 3.75 m. At the planetarium of the Observatory you would find a Viewlex Apollo projector, it shows up to 1000 stars and various galaxies through the doomed roof of the building in the dark. The display area of the museum is divided into two parts, the main area displaying pictures, models and the observatory while the upper level has a collection of historic equipment.

Fees- Admission in the observatory is free to individuals, the group visits would be charged though. 

Timings- The observatory, amongst the most fascinating places to visit in Dundee, welcomes its guests between 12:30-4 PM only during the selected days of the months when it’s opened to the public.
