The City of Caves Overview

There are more than 800 caves beneath Nottingham's streets, making it the city with the greatest cave network in the United Kingdom. The City of Caves is one of the unusual tourist attractions in Nottingham where you'll find the most accessible part of this massive cave system. In the depths of this underground marvel, you can get a once-in-a-lifetime historical experience.

The City of Caves is one of the unique places to see in Nottingham that is centred on a system of caves dug out of sandstone and utilised historically as a tannery, pub cellars, and even an air raid bunker. Historic England has the caverns on their schedule as the Caves at Drury Hill since that was the name of the mediaeval street beneath them before it was torn down to make place for the Broadmarsh Shopping Centre. Although Nottingham has been inhabited for well over a thousand years, its more recent moniker, "City of Caves," alludes to the fact that the city is home to hundreds of artificial caverns. Access to the City of Caves, which was previously only available from the upper level of the Broadmarsh Shopping Centre, is now only possible via Garner's Hill; these renovations are expected to be completed in 2021. Since its inception in 2004, the Egalitarian Trust has been responsible for managing this attraction, which is housed within the National Justice Museum.
