About Bentota

Bentota is a Sri Lankan city the name of which is taken from a mythical demon ‘Ben’ who ruled the tota or the river banks. Heading southwards from Beruwela, you reach Bentota. It is situated approximately 62 km south of Colombo. This is an exotic beach located along the Colombo- Galle road. The lagoons here stretch along the beach adding a glimpse of serenity accredited to its archipelago rich in bird life and tropical greenery.  

The beautiful city is adorned by a serene atmosphere and towering palm trees. Many tourists take the city as a combined excursion with Columbo and Beruwela. Locals from Columbo head to Bentota for an ideal
 weekend getaway. Here, the local population is predominantly composed of the Singhalese Buddhists.

Bentota is also a fitting hideout for tourists owing to the diverse accommodation options right from resorts to stays keeping in view varying budgets. You can also find a myriad of Ayurveda treatments and umpteen number of water sports and

What are the best places to visit in Bentota?

Brief Garden
Brief garden in Bentota city has an exquisite landscape. The houses in the garden are inspired by Japanese culture and tradition. Even the laws are inspired from the ancient colonial days. One can visit this beautiful garden from 8am to 5pm on any day of the week.

Bentota Beach
Bentota Beach is the perfect place to get some relaxation while on your holidays. The beach has some interesting water sports activities that you can indulge in. There are some lavish resorts near the beach and they have great facilities if you are planning to stay there.

Turtle Hatchery Project
This is one of the best places to enjoy the gift of mother nature. There are up to five endangered species of turtles in this calm environment. The turtles hatch their eggs and bloom in a protected environment before they are set free. The entry fee is around 500 Sri Lankan rupees.

Cinnamon Island  
One shouldn’t miss this place while on a tour to Bentota. This place is a popular tourist attraction and there is a cinnamon plantation set in the island which is being looked by a single family for generations. In this place, you will get to learn the process about cinnamon and its uses.  

Kande Vihare temple
This is one of the most iconic temples of Sri Lanka because it has the country's tallest Gautam Buddha statue here. There are various spots inside the temple that are famous for the historical significance that they have. There is a Bo tree along with four major Maha Devalas and various ancient relics too.
