Hadrian’s Gate Overview

Hadrian's Gate, also known as the Hadrianus Gate or Üçkapılar in Turkish, is a majestic historical structure located in Antalya, Turkey. Built in the 2nd century AD during the Roman period, the gate served as an entrance to the ancient city of Attaleia. It features a triple-arched design adorned with intricate reliefs and inscriptions. Hadrian's Gate stands as a remarkable testament to the architectural prowess of the Romans and offers visitors a glimpse into the rich history and culture of the region.

The impressive Hadrian’s Gate is a triumphal arch built in the honor of the Roman Emperor, Hadrian’s visit to Antalya in 130 A.D. The Triple Gate, situated at the entrance to the city, is a monumental gate of outstanding architecture.

It contains three rounded archways that stand on 4 large vertical pillars. The 8 m high structure, which is equivalent to a 2-storey building, is embellished by four columns each, at the front and backside. Two towers that flank the Triple Gate on either side were built independently in two different eras.

The whole of Hadrian Gate was built using Pentelic marble with exception to granite pillars. The imposing three-arched-gate contains a superstructure on its top. The visitors will be mesmerized by the floral motifs and embellished horizontal decorative molding with lion heads present on the superstructure. The park benches outside the gate offer visitors a quiet retreat to sit and enjoy the architectural grandeur of the Hadrian’s Gates.
