Shukkeien Garden Hiroshima Overview

Shukkeien Garden is a daimyo garden with a history dating back to 400 years. Adorned with pretty bridges and paths, the atmosphere in this park is calm and serene. The park’s construction began in 1620 during the Edo period at the order of Asano Nagaakira. The garden was opened to the public in 1940 when the Asano family donated the garden to the Hiroshima prefecture.

After the nuclear attack, the garden suffered extensive damage and was reopened in 1951. Post-attack, the garden became a refuge spot for victims of the war. You can also find a memorial dedicated to those who lost their lives in the nuclear bomb attack. The garden is open throughout the year and is modelled based on Lake Xihu in China. The caretakers carefully choose a colour palette at different times of the year to suit the seasons.
