The Tenement House Overview

The Tenement House provides a glimpse into life in Glasgow in the early twentieth century. It is a National Trust for Scotland property where you can discover quirky items, including a jar of plum jam made in 1929 and a ball of soap turned black from years of handling!

The Tenement House is Miss Agnes's wonderfully preserved Glasgow flat. The house seems to be frozen in time as it still retains its original nineteenth-century look. The apartment and its well-preserved contents –beds and period chairs, perfume bottles, and old theatre programs– have been beautifully transformed into a residential time capsule. Its wonders were revealed after Agnes Toward's death in 1975. Since then, many fixtures and features have been restored, including the gas lighting.

You can attend the exhibition on the ground floor to make the most of Agnes Toward's extensive personal archive. The flat is lit by gas lamps, and all the rooms contain artifacts kept by Miss Agnes in perfect condition all those years ago. Admire the original fittings and fixtures, including the age-old coal-fired kitchen range. The bathroom has a deep bath and marble-effect washbasins with mixer taps.
