St. Mary's Cathedral, Sydney Overview

St Mary's Cathedral is the seat of the archbishop of Sydney and the Cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney. The church is an incredible example of Gothic Revival Architecture and has been open since 1928. The cathedral attracts tourists due to its religious history and by the magnificent treasures that are stored within its walls. The Cathedral itself has a North-South orientation instead of the common East-West orientation and this quality is one of the unique features of the cathedral.

St. Mary's Cathedral is the official seat of The Archbishop of Sydney and it was opened in 1928. The Cathedral was built in Gothic Revival Architecture by architects William Wardell and Augustus Purging. The Cathedral has a crypt that holds the tombs of former Archbishops of Sydney and it has a cross pattern Terrazzo Mosaic flooring. 

The main features of Saint Mary's Cathedral is the newer Timber altar, the original high altar, the Cathedra which is the throne of the Archbishop, the Lectern, Chapels dedicated to Saint Joseph, The Sacred Heart, Saint Peter, The Irish Saints and the Blessed Virgin Mary. 

St Mary's Cathedral has an amazing collection of artifacts including the candlesticks and the crucifix that is believed to have been used in the first official mass of 1803. Artifacts from the first archbishop John Bede Polding, Convict Vestment which was made from Damask Silk which is said to date back to 1750. The marriage dollar that Fr. Therry loaned it to a couple so they could afford marriage service.
