De Poezenboot Overview

The De Poezenboot (Catboat) is Amsterdam's only sanctuary that offers shelter for stray and abandoned cats in a houseboat. A haven for feline lovers, the sanctuary floats on the picturesque Amsterdam canal and entices guests with its serene appeal. Visitors are welcome to play with and adopt kitties from this modern cat sanctuary and donate for the good cause.

If you are an animal lover visiting Amsterdam, then don't miss the De Poezenboot (Catboat), a sanctuary for homeless and abandoned cats. This refuge gives gentle care to felines and is known worldwide for its unique setting on a houseboat. Even though cats detest the water, they live happily at the refuge while afloat on the lovely Singel canal.

Founded in 1966, the Catboat has the sole aim of assisting as many cats as possible and has since evolved into a modern sanctuary maintained by experts. Visitors are invited to cuddle, adopt, and make charitable contributions. To keep the kittens from being overwhelmed and to ensure a nice tourist experience, the team regulates the number of visitors.

The Catboat is only open for a couple of hours (1:00 to 3:00 pm) most days of the week, except on Wednesdays and Sundays, so the cats can enjoy their time. There is also a gift shop from where visitors may shop souvenirs, such as magnet and t-shirts, with the collection going toward supporting the sanctuary's operations.
