Het Schip Overview

Het Schip (The Ship), a magnificent apartment complex from the early 20th century in Amsterdam, is the best example of the School of Amsterdamse style. Today, it is the location of an architectural museum dedicated to the Amsterdamse School, which displays the origins and the best specimens of this distinctive style. The permanent interactive exhibition promises a surprising and motivating visit for visitors of all ages.

The expressionist house complex, Het Schip, was constructed in 1919 by architect Michel de Klerk and is commonly known as "The Ship" because of its design. It had public facilities, such as a community center, school, post office, and 120 inexpensive residences, making it an essential visit for those exploring Europe Tour Packages from India. It was the pinnacle of the Amsterdamse School, a style of building and ornamentation that was popular throughout the Netherlands during that time.

The former Amsterdamse School is now a museum with a permanent exhibition called "Constructed Ideals" that depicts the growth of housing organizations and the Amsterdamse School as a design inspiration in architecture and interior design. It also hosts numerous ad hoc exhibitions based on architecture and design. The post office, the last surviving original post office from the 1920s in the Netherlands, is now a part of the museum and exhibits its treasures.

Het Schip is an intriguing quarter built in the Amsterdamse School style and is now extensively renovated. You can take a guided tour of the complex and see how the residents of Amsterdam live in the area while admiring the building's aesthetic components and touring the museum, the former post office, and the museum flat.
