Nestled amidst the rice fields of the Tabanan regency in the western part of Bali is the verdant Alas Kedaton. The entire complex has forests spread across 12 hectares and has an ancient temple at its focal point. Also named “Alas Kedaton,” or the “forest of the monkey,” the place is the home to a booming community of more than 2000 macaques which are long-tail monkeys.

The ancient temple Pura Dalem Kahyangan Kedaton Temple was erected within the forest when in ancient times. A revered Hindu sage, during his spiritual journey, discovered the Alas Kedaton and considered it sacred to build a temple. The temple is dedicated to Balinese Hindu gods and has beautiful sculptures of them. Some of the structures you will be able to witness on your Bali trip are the Lingga Yoni's statue of Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha and Devi Durga Mahisasura Mardhani.

The monkeys are like guardians of the temple and roam around freely in the complex. You will find the playful animals climbing up the temple walls and surrounding trees.
