Park Guell Barcelona Overview

Park Güell is the top tourist destination of Barcelona that has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park is famous for its structures and buildings with a rainbow-coloured mosaic that has been designed by the eminent architect Antoni Gaudi. Park Guell, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the largest green spaces in Barcelona. The sprawling park was named after Eusebi Güell, a rich entrepreneur, who commissioned Antoni Gaudi to build a residential complex. The project was stopped in between and Gaudi converted it into a park using the Catalan Modernism architectural style which earned the park as well as Gaudi a lot of fame.

The vast park sits on a hill on the edge of Barcelona and covers 19 hectares of area which is further divided into two parts. While the forest zone spreads over 8 hectares and is filled with lush greenery, the monumental zone is spread over 12 hectares and has pathways along with structures covered with rainbow-coloured mosaics.The palm shaped iron gate, the dragon staircase and the buildings and structures housed inside the park will surely add to your amazement

How To Reach

By Metro: Reach either Lesseps metro station (Line 3) or Vallcarca metro station (Line 3) by metro rail and walk for 15 minutes to reach the park. From Lesseps metro station, your nearest entrance will be the monumental area main gate. From the Vallcarca metro station, you will be accessing the park from the west.

By Bus: Take bus no H6 or D40 and get down at the Travessera de Dalt bus stop. From the stop, walk for 10 minutes to reach the park either from Avinguda del Santuari de Sant Josep de la Muntanya or from Carrer de Larrard.

Best Time To Visit

The best time to visit the park will be during the opening hours at 9:00 am on weekdays. During that time, the crowd is less and you will not need to wait in the queue for long for your turn. Also, the weather in the morning is pleasant for visiting the outdoor attraction.

Tips to Visit

1. Purchase tickets online before visiting the popular Park Guell and skip the long line that is there at the ticket counter. 

2. Taking the bus from the nearest metro station to go to the park will be faster than walking uphill. 

3. The park is on a hill and you will need to walk a lot, hence, wear sturdy but comfortable shoes. 

4. It is recommended that you cover your head with a hat, your eyes with sunglasses, and put on sunscreen lotion to protect yourself from the heat.

5. Carry water with you to keep yourself hydrated. You can also take along a few snacks to munch in between.

Pathways And Viaducts

The Park Güell has an intricate network of paths, shortcuts, smaller pathways, viaducts and bridges throughout the property. You will be able to enjoy the beauty of the 19th Century park while walking through the pathways. You will find the three viaducts gliding in succession, namely the Pont del Mig, Pont de Baix, and Pont de Dalt that are made of unhewn stones.

You will find the Porter’s Lodge at the entrance of the park. It is a beautiful pavilion with a residence in it and is one of the two pavilions at the entrance with gorgeous roofs planned by Antoni Gaudi. Visit the pavilion to take a look at the marvelous architecture displayed in the form of ceramic tiled stone walls and also iron gates that have been shaped like palm leaves.

The Dragon Staircase

The beautiful twin-flight staircase rises from the gateway of the park to the Hypostyle Room. The Dragon Stairway is divided into 3 sections and has a fountain that runs along its edges. You will be delighted to see the distinct landings of this staircase where the first one has a goblin sculpture. The second one has the emblem of Catalonia and the third one has a tile-shard mosaic-covered salamander.

The Hypostyle Room

 Use the Dragon Stairway to reach the Hypostyle room which has been supported by 86 striped columns out of which the outer ones slope in an undulating form. Take a look at the ceiling of the room and feel delighted looking at the small domes with exquisite patterns of tile-shard mosaics made on traditional clay bricks. Initially, the Hypostyle Room was intended to be the marketplace for the estate.

This is the highest viewpoint of the park and you will need to make an effort to reach the top using the steep stairway. As you reach the top, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the city of Barcelona.

The Austria garden was initially a municipal plant nursery and later became a beautiful garden with a distinguished look. This beautiful area is located in the Forest zone of the park and has two prominent houses one of which is the Gaudí House museum. The open-air Greek Theater, currently known as the Plaça de la Natura (Nature Square) is located at the heart of Park Güell. The vast platform sits over the Hypostyle columns and is lined with tile shard mosaic patterned benches on the stairway side and a wall with large capitals made to look like palm trees on the mountainside. The area was designed for staging large open-air shows which could be seen from surrounding terraces.
