Casa Amatller Barcelona Overview

Casa Amatller is a building in Barcelona, designed by Catalan architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch in the Modernista style. It is one of the most emblematic of the city's many Modernista buildings and is considered to be one of the finest examples of Catalan Modernisme. The building is located on Passeig de Gràcia, one of Barcelona's most fashionable streets, and was commissioned by chocolatier Antoni Amatller. It is also one of the three important buildings that make up the city’s popular Block of Discord.

Casa Amatller is notable for its ornate facade, which is decorated with a variety of motifs inspired by Catalan culture and history. The house had a ground floor which has now been converted into a museum, in addition to four other floors, along with a garden. The entire house exudes the three major elements that represent the interests of Antoni Amatller, namely photography, chocolate and antique glassware. 

The building also features a number of other Modernista elements, such as wrought iron balconies and stained glass windows. Inside, the building is just as lavish as its exterior, with a grand staircase, an intricate ceiling, and a number of beautiful stained glass windows. You can also discover numerous other attractions inside the house, including paintings by Baroque and Ramón Casas, a Hispanic-Flemish table by Bartolomé Bermejo as well as numerous glass collections and jewellery by Lalique. There is also a chocolate shop onsite, where you can get your hands on delicious chocolates or try a cup of signature Amatller hot cocoa.

The Façade

The Casa Amatller is located on the Passeig de Gràcia, one of the city's most fashionable streets and is owned by the Foundation Amatller de Arquitectura. 

The facade of the Casa Amatller is decorated with a number of sculptural elements. The most notable of these is the figure of a Catalan saint, George, in the act of slaying a dragon. This figure is located above the main entrance to the building. You can also find a lot of intricate works done on the cabinets of stones and ceramics here, in addition to a lot of elements from Flemish and neo-Gothic styles.

The Furniture

The furniture inside Casa Amatller have also mostly been designed by Josep Puig I Cadafalch, and are some of the most stunning pieces of ornamentation work of Catalan modernist architecture that you can ever come across. All of the furniture was a part of the work of art in the Antoni Amatller collection within the museum here. 

The furniture inside the Casa Amatller is a mix of antique and modern pieces. The living room furniture includes a sofa, chairs, and a coffee table from the early 20th century. The dining room furniture is a mix of antique and modern pieces, with the table and chairs being from the early 20th century and the sideboard being from the late 19th century. The bedroom furniture is mostly from the early 20th century, with the exception of the bed, which is from the late 19th century.

Exhibition Space

The ground floor of Casa Amatller has been transformed into a museum, and boasts of an amazing lobby right as you enter the house. This lobby leads you to a glass door which used to be a garage, and currently houses the on-site cafeteria and shop where you can enjoy hot chocolate and buy souvenirs.

As you pass by the vestibule into the courtyard, you will come across the grand staircase here, which will take you to the top floor of the house, where you can discover a lot of sculptures and other exhibits. The Exhibition Space is located on the top floor of the Casa Amatller. The space is used to host temporary exhibitions, which are usually related to the history or the architecture of the building.

The Casa Amatller is home to an impressive collection of art and artefacts from across the globe. Visitors can see a wide variety of items on display, ranging from ancient Egyptian statuary to modern art pieces.
