The Basilica of St. Mary of the Altar of Heaven is popular in Rome and is located at the peak of the Campidoglio. The name Basilica di Santa Maria in Ara Coeli is derived from a legend that believed that sibyl might have predicted the origin of Augustus, the son of God. 

Constructed in the early 6th century on the ruins of a magnificent temple, Basilica di Santa Maria in AraCoeli is the most sought-after destination in Rome, Italy. It stands at the highest point of one of Rome’s seven hills, Capitol hill. Earlier, the name of Basilica di Santa Maria in AraCoeli was Sancta Maria in Capitolio because it was located at Capitol hill. However, in the 14th century, its name changed to The Basilica of St. Mary of the Altar of Heaven. 

The church’s foundation was laid in 574 on one of the most significant sites of the Byzantine abbey. Several structures are being developed around the initial church building. In the middle age, Basilica di Santa Maria in AraCoeli played a significant role as it was where councillors gathered and discussed the Res Publica. 

The church is famously known for housing a wooden statue of Santo Bambino of Aracoeli. The facade of Basilica di Santa Maria in AraCoeli features golden brown tiles, massive towers, tinted windows and lavish chandeliers, making it a perfect destination for everyone.
