The capital of northern Bardez taluka, Mapusa is Goa’s third largest city. Serving as a major market town for the surrounding beach areas of Calangute, Candolim, Anjuna and Baga among others, the small has a lot to offer for the leisurely travelers. The town of Mapusa is congregated around Mount Alto. The city gets its name from the Konkani word ‘map’ which means to measure and a suffix ‘sa’ which is a phase fill up is added to the name. Mapusa is a run of the mill Goan town in a Portuguese style setting and shows current Indian culture. The church is also known as St Jerome's locally and dates back originally from the year 1594 when the first edifice was built. Since the Church is located on the original site of an ancient Hindu temple, the Hindu community also considers it sacred area. The other famous shrine is that of Lord Bodgeshwar, located on the outskirts of the town in the middle of some rice fields, which is beautifully lit up at night and draws thousands of devotees for its annual Jatra (festival). The whole city comes alive every Friday morning when people from all over Goa who come here to buy and sell their wares. . If you want a riot of colour and a whole new experience in sight, sound and smell as a backdrop to the fine art of haggling, then this is the place which worthy of visiting.
