Luís I Bridge Overview

Without a doubt, Luís I Bridge is the top attraction in the city and is a very important landmark. Located on top of the river Douri, the bridge links the Port wine houses of Vila Nova de Gaia with the downtown Ribeira district of Porto. The bridge took 5 years to complete and was built between 1881 to 1886. The bridge was built on an existing bridge and you can still witness the massive granite pillars of the original bridge.

The bridge has huge beautiful ironwork frameworks and was designed by D. Maria Pia who also designed the most famous Eiffel tower in Paris. The bridge is 565 ft in width and 146 ft in height and is famous for its amazing engineering. One of the top features of the bridge is its two levels. The bridge has an arch, one is on top of the arch and the other level is below the arch.

Both lower and upper decks were built to take road traffic, however, the bridge also carries Porto metro trains. The upper deck also has a walkway where you can take a stroll and enjoy the stunning view of the city. The upper level is 60 meters above the ground and you can see cruise ships in the water below and a lovely view from above.
