This cave was originally discovered in the 17th century and it was closed in 2018 due to the huge influx of tourists. Later, it was reopened and it continues to be a prominent tourist spot. While the cave has a hot spring located inside of it, tourists are not allowed to take a dip in it due to high temperatures.
Nevertheless, the cave is still open for visitors. So if you are looking to know more about the natural landscapes of Iceland, then this cave has got you covered.
• Check out the hot spring inside the cave where Game of Thrones was filmed.
• Take the hiking trail located just outside the cave until you reach the nearby crater- another natural phenomenon.
• Go to the nearby geothermal field with bubbling mud pools which were formed due to molten lava and gas explosions.
• Rejuvenate your senses as you take a dip in the natural springs or steam bath at Lake Mvatn.
• Rent a campervan to explore the Grjotagja cave as a budget friendly alternative to staying in a hotel.
Grjotagja cave is open throughout the year, so you can plan your visit to this place at any month.
Visitor's Tips:
While many believe that this is the cave where Game of Thrones was filmed, in reality it was not. In fact the cave scene of Jon Snow and Ygritte was filmed in a studio, but it was a replica of this cave. If you are a Game of Thrones fan, then this cave is for you. There are dedicated Game of Thrones tours that cover the different spots where the series was filmed, and this cave is also a part of it. The cave has a thermal spring and was first discovered in the 18th century by Jon Markusson.
Located close to the Grjotagja cave, the Myvatn Nature Baths is the go to place for those who want to experience the best of the hot springs of Iceland. Here, you have the choice of trying out either the hot spring or the steam bath. Either way, both come with different health benefits and can rejuvenate your senses. After the bath, you can enjoy a meal in the house and try out the local cuisine too.
This is a museum built in memory of a great bird collector named Sigurgeir. This museum houses more than 300 stuffed birds and 500 eggs. Apart from that, you can have a look at the 280 birds and 300 eggs on display in the gallery too. The museum was established in 2008 and ever since then, it has been the go to spot for a lot visiting Grjotagja cave, especially after visiting the cave.
